A few days ago, the cyclist Tom Boonen made headlines in the cycling press for a statement in which he said that Pogacar would be unbeatable if he didn't ride a Colnago bike. The brand did not let the criticism go unnoticed and replied in kind. Now Boonen has put an end to the controversy with a sincere apology to the brand and the Colnago family, as publicly requested by Ernesto Colnago himself.

Tom Boonen apologizes for his criticism: "I have nothing but respect for the Colnago family and their brand"

The story of the week was Tom Boonen, and it began with a statement from his podcast partner and fellow exciclist Dirk De Wolf that Pogacar would go up to 2 km/h faster if he rode one of the Jumbo-Visma, Ineos Grenadiers or Soudal-Quick Step bikes. In addition, Boonen added some comments about Colnago, such as "it's still a bit of an old-school bike and they haven't mastered the aerodynamics yet."

After Boonen's words went viral, Colnago issued a statement on Thursday inviting the former world champion to visit its factory and test the V4Rs with which Pogacar currently races. And Ernesto Colnago himself posted on his Instagram account a very clear and direct message to the Belgian: "I don’t think this comment deserves so much a response from me, but rather an apology from someone else".

Ernesto Colnago himself sent a direct message to Boonen: "Credo che questa vicenda non meriti una risposta da parte mia ma sicuramente delle scuse da qualcun altro" "I don’t think this comment deserves so much a response from me, but rather an apology from someone else".

To which Boonen has been quick to reply with a heartfelt apology from his Instagram account in which he is full of praise for the Colnago family and confesses that his dream as a young man was always to win a Paris Roubaix riding a Colnago.

"When I was a young rider I dreamed about one day winning Paris-Roubaix on a Colnago. It's a shame I never got a chance to ride one of your bikes. To me Colnago stands for passion and legacy. So it breaks my heart that my words were poorly chosen when I responded to Dirks claims in our podcast. Mea culpa, I have nothing but respect for the Colnago family and their brand."
