Van der Poel aims for double gold at the Olympics: road and mountain bike
His form in cyclocross is proving unbeatable for the rest of his rivals, including Van Aert and Pidcock, but Van der Poel's main goal for 2024 is not in this discipline. For the first time, he admits that he wants to go for the gold medals in road and mountain bike at the Paris Olympics.
Mathieu van der Poel is considering going for two Olympic golds in 2024
Although at the beginning of the season, Van der Poel hinted that cyclocross might not be present in future plans, during these weeks his main goal is to win his sixth World Championship on February 4th in Tabor. But it was during an interview with La Gazzeta dello Sport when he first hinted that his main goal for 2024 will be to try for a double gold at the Paris Olympics.

"I'm focused on a sixth cyclocross world title, I'm not thinking about anything else," he explained. "I'll worry about planning the rest of my season afterwards. But without a doubt, the Olympics are the north star of my 2024 season."
"We have to study the best path to Paris, perhaps combining it with the Tour de France, it's a difficult puzzle to solve. I haven't yet decided if I will only participate in the road race (August 3), in the mountain bike race (July 29) or in both."
After this exclusive, and just a few days before the end of 2023, Van der Poel closed the interview with his particular wishes for 2024:
"I just want to enjoy my year with the rainbow jersey and confirm all the good things I did in 2023" "If I look beyond the world of sport, there is no doubt: I can only wish for peace in the world".
