La Vuelta 2027 will start from Santiago de Compostela and will do so later than usual

The Vuelta already has a starting point for 2027. Santiago de Compostela will be responsible for launching an edition that will begin on September 4, will feature at least four stages in Galicia, and will bring Madrid back as the finish line of the race.

Santiago de Compostela will launch La Vuelta 2027

Just a few hours before La Vuelta 2026 ends in Granada, the organization has announced one of the first major details of the next edition. La Vuelta 2027 will start on September 4 in Santiago de Compostela, coinciding with the celebration of the Xacobeo Year.

The announcement was made in Granada by Javier Guillén, general director of La Vuelta, alongside Marcos Gómez Román, commissioner of Xacobeo 2027.

The first stage will not be a time trial, but a road stage inspired by the Camino de Santiago. The organization intends for Galicia to have significant prominence during the start of the race.

"There will be a minimum of four stages and the idea is to have a presence in all four Galician provinces", explained Guillén during the announcement.

The routes for those days have not yet been presented, so we will have to wait to know where the first stages of La Vuelta 2027 will start and finish.

La Vuelta will leave from Spain again after three years

The choice of Santiago will also mean the return of La Vuelta's departure to Spanish territory. The last three editions started outside of Spain, with Lisbon in 2024, Turin in 2025, and Monaco in 2026.

Santiago already knows what it means to launch the Spanish round. The Galician capital hosted the start of La Vuelta 1982, so by 2027, 45 years will have passed since that occasion. Additionally, it will be the ninth time Galicia has hosted the start of the race.

The relationship between Santiago and La Vuelta also includes much more recent episodes. In 2021, the race finished in the Praza do Obradoiro after a time trial from Padrón, an edition in which Primož Roglič won his third Vuelta. Santiago was also the scene of the race's finish in 2014, when Alberto Contador took the red jersey.

La Vuelta 2027 will take place later than usual

The next edition will also have exceptional dates. La Vuelta 2027 will be held from September 4 to 26, a shift in the calendar motivated by the so-called Super World Cycling Championship that will take place in Haute-Savoie, France, from August 24 to September 5.

"These will be exceptional dates due to the Super World Championship of all disciplines. After that, it will return to its usual dates, which are the best for La Vuelta," explained Guillén.

After the start in Santiago and the Galician block of at least four stages, the complete route remains to be presented. What is confirmed is that Madrid will regain the traditional finish of La Vuelta in 2027, after the 2026 edition concludes this Sunday in Granada.

La Vuelta 2027 will thus start in Santiago de Compostela on September 4 and finish in Madrid on September 26.
