Tobias Halland Johannessen has taken the final victory of La Vuelta a España 2026 in Granada. The Norwegian was the fastest in a small group ahead of Alessandro Romele and Ramses Debruyne in an explosive final circuit around the Alhambra. Behind, Enric Mas calmly completed the last kilometers to officially confirm the most important victory of his career.

Johannessen takes the final stage of La Vuelta 2026

The last day began with the usual celebratory atmosphere after three weeks of racing. Movistar took control of the peloton during the first kilometers and enjoyed a day specially prepared for Enric Mas. The team even replaced their usual blue kit with a red one to celebrate their leader's imminent triumph.

But the scene changed completely upon reaching the Granada circuit. There, four climbs to the Alhambra awaited, 2.1 kilometers at 6.6%, before returning to the Paseo del Salón.

Groupama-FDJ was one of the teams that toughened the race and managed to select the peloton. Matthew Brennan managed to get into one of the early breaks, while Wout van Aert was initially left behind.

The last climb to the Alhambra definitively ended Van Aert's chances. Pello Bilbao attacked, and Axel Laurance then took over, but the situation partially regrouped again during the descent.

Two kilometers from the finish, Ramses Debruyne broke the group again. Johannessen and Romele managed to follow the decisive moves, and the three arrived together at the last kilometer.

Johannessen launched the sprint from afar, and Romele could not catch up. The Norwegian thus closed La Vuelta with a victory, Romele finished second, and Debruyne third. Brennan led the next group to finish fourth.

Enric Mas wins La Vuelta a España 2026

The other great image of the day was several minutes behind the battle for the stage. As announced by the organization before the start, the times for the general classification were set before facing the last lap of the circuit, preventing a fall or a mechanical issue in the most technical kilometers from altering the result of three weeks of racing.

Once that point was passed, Enric Mas could finally celebrate. The Mallorcan rode the last kilometers accompanied by his Movistar teammates and enjoyed the crowd in Granada before crossing the finish line as the winner of La Vuelta a España 2026.

Mas finishes with 2:15 over Primož Roglič and 2:44 over Felix Gall. Richard Carapaz finishes fourth, while Sepp Kuss completes a great final week to finish fifth.

Mas's victory also ends a twelve-year wait for Spanish cycling. Since Alberto Contador's victory in 2014, no Spanish rider had won La Vuelta again.
