Sony Colbrelli retires from cycling after cardiac arrest at the Volta a Catalunya
In 2021 he was one of the most outstanding cyclists in the peloton and will go down in history as the winner of one of the most epic editions of Paris Roubaix. But the former European champion suffered a major setback earlier this year when he suffered a heart attack in the middle of the race.
The first stage of the Volta a Catalunya 2022 was underway and Sonny Colbrelli entered the finish line in second place after a sprint for the victory, but when he crossed the line the Italian collapsed and had to be reanimated by the organisation's medical assistance.
He had suffered a cardiac arrest and had to have a subcutaneous defibrillator implanted. Since then he has not raced again and La Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that the Team Bahrain Victorious rider will announce his definitive retirement on 15 November.
