New SCOTT Lumen: "It's basically like having legs like Nino Schurter, just on demand"
The SCOTT Lumen opens the lightweight electric mountain bike segment of the Swiss brand's catalogue. And it does it in style with a 15.5 kg model that takes all the good things from the acclaimed Spark and combines them with the quiet and powerful TQ HPR50 electric system. The result is one of the most advanced lightweight XC/Trail eMTBs available today.

SCOTT's first lightweight eMTB
The 15.5 kg of the new SCOTT Lumen is a statement of intent. It is true that this figure is for the top of the range model, but it makes it clear that the Lumen eRIDE is closer to a conventional mountain bike than an electric bike. In figures, a current full suspension XC MTB can have an average weight of 11 kg, while an electric bike with a 700Wh battery and a powerful motor usually weighs around 20 kg.
With this philosophy, the Lumen can be fitted with lightweight components and offers the same feeling as any regular MTB, and can even be ridden with the system completely switched off. During the presentation, one of the SCOTT engineers defined the concept of the new Lumen well: "It's basically like having legs like Nino Schurter, just on demand".

How did they achieve this?
The SCOTT engineers started this project from scratch, but they had all the experience of the brand, so they took one of the fastest XC's of the moment, the latest Spark generation, as a starting point and set their goals for a lightweight, quiet and compact eMTB.
TQ HPR50: light, compact, powerful and very silent
The electrical system has been at the heart of the project, and after a year of research the development team decided that the new TQ HPR50 system would be the chosen one. A very compact motor that made it possible to fit it into the new frame without making too many modifications to the current Spark.
The German manufacturer TQ has developed this motor with harmonic gear system, hence the name Harmonic Pin Ring (HPR), with a diameter of only 8 cm, capable of delivering 50 Nm and weighing only 1.85 kg. An unprecedented power-to-weight ratio. But if its power-to-weight ratio is unprecedented, it is directly unique in terms of acoustics. It is a completely silent engine that allows you to enjoy a 100% natural experience.
This unit is rated at 250 W, but is capable of peaking at 300 W when it is pushed to 100%. In addition, the manufacturer claims that it is capable of running at 3 times lower revolutions than usual motors, which results in less wear and tear and a longer service life.
Light weight + two batteries = great autonomy
The SCOTT Lumen comes with a 360 Wh battery integrated into its down tube. It is a light and slim 1.8 kg battery that allows for optimal weight distribution and contributes to improved pedalling sensations.
The key with a lightweight eMTB is that as it weighs less, you need less power and therefore less battery to cover the same distance, so although this battery may seem small, it is actually more powerful than a heavier electric MTB.
However, for those who want more autonomy, SCOTT has taken advantage of the design of its frame with integrated shock that leaves space for two water bottle mounts, and allows you to add an additional 160Wh external battery in one of these bottle cages, which means 44% more autonomy. With this system we can choose to carry two water bottles or just one and the external battery.
Smart charging, control and minimalist settings
Next to the left handlebar grip there is a minimalist remote that allows you to switch between Eco, Mid and High modes, or Walk Mode, without having to take your hand off the handlebars.
On the top tube there is an integrated 2" display where essential information such as battery status, speed metrics, rider power, motor power, remaining range, etc. can be viewed at a glance. This LED display is controlled by a small button.
But the settings and controls of the system are multiplied if we link our smartphone via Bluetooth and through the TQ E-Bike App. From the app you can configure the different modes by varying the level of assistance, power and speed of response or track the route taken. You can also connect your bike computer via ANT+.
Finally, the TQ smart charger allows you to charge both internal and range extender batteries at the same time, but automatically gives priority to charging the integrated battery. The charging time offered by the manufacturer is very fast and promises an 80% charge in two hours.
A frame modified to be as light and stiff as possible
You only have to look at it to see that the SCOTT Lumen eRIDE is almost identical to the new generation Spark. Both share the same design and the same single pivot rear suspension system with the shock integrated into the frame itself. But to fit the motor and battery into the Lumen, the frame had to be optimised without too many modifications.
The result is a frame with integrated shock, motor and battery with only a 17% increase in volume compared to the Spark. At first glance it is very difficult to say that this is an electric MTB.
With 130mm of travel, it seemed logical that the Lumen would take the Spark 900 as a reference, but even so, some adjustments have been made to the frame, such as changes to the thickness of the carbon layers, the kinematics, the positioning of the shock and the geometry.
Highly loaded areas such as the head tube and bottom bracket have been reinforced with more layers of carbon and aluminium inserts to counteract the stresses caused by the weight increase itself. And in less stressed areas, such as seat stays and down and top tubes, the amount of frame material has been reduced to save grams.
As seen on the current generation Spark, the integrated shock design achieves more efficient power transfer, optimises suspension performance and allows the use of larger bearings at the pivot point of the down tube, which improve lateral stiffness, among other things. But to accommodate the motor and achieve the extra 10mm of travel, up to 130mm, this Lumen has had to minimally modify the position of the shock and make the chainstays a little longer.
The lower cover that provides access to the shock has also been modified with ventilation openings to help cool the motor.
As with all other SCOTT models with integrated suspension, the rear suspension settings can be accessed through the bottom cover itself. From there you can set the rebound, change the TwinLoc cable or adjust the shock pressure. To make the latter easier, Scott supplies the Lumen with an extender that attaches to the valve and makes it easier to connect the pump.
On the Lumen the SAG control is now in plain sight and on one of the pivots of the vertical tube there is a SAG indicator, which is used to see the percentage to which the SAG is adjusted. With a simple glance we can see if we have the desired SAG. Above this pivot is a discreet opening from which you can check the O-ring on the shock and find out how much suspension travel you have used.
Geometry optimised for e-bike
To achieve the same feeling as a regular XC mountain bike, the SCOTT Lumen had to have a similar geometry to one of them, and again the SCOTT engineers took the measurements of the Spark 900 as a reference. The goal was the same for both models, great downhill capability and the agility of an XC uphill.
GEOMETRY COMPARATIVE | SCOTT LUMEN | SCOTT SPARK 900 |
Reach | 446mm | 440mm |
Seat angle | 77º | 75,9º |
Front travel | 130mm | 130mm |
Rear travel | 130mm | 120mm |
Chainstay | 450 | 437,5 |
Head tube angle | 65,5º | 65,8º |
BB Offset | -38,5 | -43,5 |
The Lumen's head tube angle has been relaxed a little more, to 65.5°, although it can be easily adjusted by 0.6° to make it more downhill or more agile on climbs. The seat angle has been increased to 77º to make it easier to pedal on steep hills, the bottom bracket height has been increased and the chainstay length has been increased to 450mm to make it more stable.
The TQ motor also plays a part in the geometry as it allows a standard Q factor to be maintained and a 55mm chainline to be used. This leaves roomy wheel arches that accept tyres up to 2.4" without sacrificing stiffness, an important point to ensure good power transfer. It also makes the pedalling position identical to that of a regular bike.
The TwinLoc multiplies the SCOTT Lumen
The Lumen also features the familiar TwinLoc 3-position system, which allows you to adjust the fork and shock behaviour and activate the dropper post via the remote control on the handlebars.
The Lockout mode freezes the suspension while keeping the geometry intact. Traction mode varies the bottom bracket ground clearance and limits the suspension travel, offering extra traction with minimal pedalling pollution. Finally, the Downhill mode makes the full suspension travel available to the rider.
Integration and details
The frame design and internal cable routing make the SCOTT Lumen one of the best-integrated eMTBs on the market, something the brand has put a lot of effort into. In addition, the 900 SL and 900 are fitted with the Syncros Fraser IC DC stem-handlebar assembly, which further unifies the set-up and routes the cables inside the frame.
The 910 and Contessa models feature standard handlebars and stems, prepared for easy internal cable routing. The grips are also made by Syncros and feature the new puncture repair wick kit.
