Trek has just presented the new Domane+ SL, an electric road bike that features practically everything new compared to the previous generation. New OCLV 500 carbon frame, the compact TQ HPR40 motor, two battery options, up to 40 mm of tire clearance, and a weight that can be as low as 11.1 kg. According to Trek, it is the lightest electric bike with the greatest range they have manufactured to date.

Trek Domane+ SL: an electric bike that increasingly resembles a conventional bike

The evolution of lightweight electric road bikes is making them look more and more like a conventional model at first glance. To achieve this, the brand has redesigned its Trek Domane+ SL aiming to reduce weight and simplify its integration, but without sacrificing comfort and versatility for spending many hours on the bike.

In fact, it shares several fundamental elements with the new conventional carbon Domane, such as the Road Endurance geometry, tire clearance of up to 40 mm, the new Bontrager Riser handlebar with an additional 20 mm of rise, and a new carbon seat post designed to provide flex and filter out road irregularities.

The big difference is, obviously, inside the frame.

The new TQ HPR40 allows for even further weight and size reduction of the electric system

The Domane+ SL abandons the previous system to incorporate the new TQ HPR40, a smaller, lighter, and quieter motor than the HPR60. According to data provided by Trek, it represents a saving of 660 grams compared to the HPR60 and maintains a Q factor equivalent to that of a conventional road bike.

Integration is one of the most striking aspects. The motor practically disappears around the bottom bracket, and the battery is completely hidden in the down tube, so visually the new Domane+ SL comes much closer to a conventional bike.

But Trek has not only aimed to make the assistance visually and acoustically discreet. The HPR40 is designed to respond based on the force applied by the cyclist and offer a progressive delivery.

Additionally, the Domane+ SL allows for system configuration from the Trek Central app. The bike comes configured as standard with up to 150% assistance but can be adjusted to reach 200% support for the cyclist, being the first bike equipped with TQ HPR40 that allows this configuration.

The app itself allows for modifying parameters related to power delivery and motor response to adapt its behavior to the type of route or the cyclist's preferences.

From 11.1 kg: it is the lightest electric bike manufactured by Trek

Probably one of the most striking facts about this new generation is its weight. The lightest configuration of the Trek Domane+ SL weighs 11.1 kg, officially making it the lightest e-bike that Trek has produced to date.

To achieve this, the brand has combined the new and more compact TQ system with a frame made of OCLV Series 500 carbon and components aimed at keeping the weight down.

This is a particularly significant figure in an electric bike that does not intend to limit itself to offering a small assist over a few dozen kilometers. Trek has also placed a lot of emphasis on range.

Two batteries to choose between minimum weight or up to 185 km of range

Here comes another of the major innovations of the Domane+ SL.

Trek offers two batteries:

  • 360 Wh: 1.85 kg and up to approximately 113 km
  • 580 Wh: 2.5 kg and up to 185 km
  • Optional Range Extender: adds approximately another 30 miles/48 km of range

The 360 Wh battery is the standard option, while the 580 Wh can be selected through Project One, allowing prioritization between a lighter bike or significantly greater range.

Trek warns, as usual, that actual figures depend on factors such as the cyclist's weight, terrain, speed, weather conditions, and level of assistance used.

With the 580 Wh battery, the brand announces up to 185 km, making this Domane+ SL the electric bike with the greatest range in its catalog to date.

Up to 40 mm tires to expand its usage terrain

Although it remains an endurance road bike and Trek makes it clear that it does not intend to turn it into a gravel bike, the new Domane+ SL significantly increases its possibilities off perfect asphalt.

The frame accommodates tires up to 40 mm, while the standard mounts use 35 mm tires. This allows for greater comfort and grip on deteriorated roads and tackling simple trails or mixed routes.

Trek precisely defines its positioning as all-road, but not gravel, differentiating it from the Checkpoint+. Compared to the latter, the Domane+ SL uses a road endurance geometry, is lighter, and offers greater range.

It also maintains a relaxed Road Endurance geometry and will be available in six sizes. The new Riser handlebar adds 20 mm of height and is combined with a conventional 27.2 mm seat post specifically designed to provide comfort.

Integrated lights powered directly by the battery

Another practical novelty is the incorporation of integrated front and rear lighting. Both lights are connected directly to the TQ battery, so they do not require independent batteries and charge along with the bike's electrical system.

At the front, a Supernova Starstream Mini with 450 lumens is installed, while at the rear Trek uses a Flare C. The specifications of the rear light vary depending on the market.

The bike also features mounts for fenders and for Trek's Adventure Triangle bags, reinforcing its character as a bike designed for long routes. However, it does not have a mount for a rear rack.

Among other details, we find the RCS Headset steering system, UDH derailleur hanger, and Switch Pro thru-axles.

Project One even allows you to choose the battery capacity

The Domane+ SL also enters Project One, and Trek expands the usual customization options with a particularly important choice in an electric bike: the battery.

The buyer will be able to choose between 360 and 580 Wh, as well as select color, components, and certain measurements at no additional cost, such as crank length or handlebar width. Elements such as wheels, tires, stem, or handlebar can also be configured.

This allows for the creation of two quite different bikes on the same platform: a Domane+ SL aiming to get as close as possible to the weight and feel of a conventional bike, or a configuration aimed at maximizing range.
