How much does it cost to charge an e-bike in Spain? Much less than you think
Electric bicycles have increasingly powerful motors and batteries that now exceed 800 Wh, but how much does it really cost to charge them at home? We have done the calculations using the average electricity price in Spain over the last 12 months, and the result is surprising: fully charging an 800 Wh eMTB costs just a few cents.
How much does it cost to charge an eBike in Spain
To calculate this, we used historical data from OCU as a reference. Between October 2025 and September 2026, the average electricity price in the regulated PVPC tariff was approximately 0.147 €/kWh before taxes. Including the corresponding taxes for that period, we obtain an estimated price of 0.183 €/kWh, taxes included.
This figure corresponds to the regulated tariff, not the average of all Spanish electricity contracts, and excludes the fixed costs of the bill.
An 800 Wh battery stores 0.8 kWh of energy, but we must consider that chargers are not completely efficient. Assuming an overall efficiency of 90%, a full charge requires approximately 0.889 kWh from the grid.

How much does it cost to charge an eBike according to its battery?
Applying the same electricity price and an estimated charging efficiency of 90%, these would be the approximate costs of a full recharge:
| Battery Capacity | Price per Charge |
|---|---|
| 400 Wh | 0.08 € |
| 500 Wh | 0.10 € |
| 625 Wh | 0.13 € |
| 750 Wh | 0.15 € |
| 800 Wh | 0.16 € |
| 900 Wh | 0.18 € |
| 1,000 Wh | 0.20 € |
And how much does it cost to charge an eMTB for a whole year?
If we use an eMTB with an 800 Wh battery, the expense will depend on how many times we need to fully recharge it:
- 10 charges a month: 1.63 €.
- 20 charges a month: 3.25 €.
- 30 charges a month: 4.88 €.
- One daily charge for a year: 59.33 €.
To put it in perspective, a video game console that consumes 200 W for four hours needs 0.8 kWh, practically the same as a full charge of our eMTB. In this example, an afternoon of gaming would cost about 15 cents, not counting the electricity cost of the television.
Moreover, we do not always deplete the battery. Charging from 20% to 80% of an 800 Wh battery would cost approximately 10 cents.
Those with time-of-use tariffs can further reduce this expense by charging during the cheaper hours.
In short, even using an eMTB practically every day, the cost of electricity is very low. The real expense of an electric bicycle is more related to its purchase, maintenance, and eventual battery replacement than to the consumption needed to recharge it.
