Anyone can use Geraint Thomas' secret to maintain motivation for many years
After 18 years as a professional at the age of 38, Geraint Thomas still enjoys riding his bike as much as the first day. In a recent interview with the well-known website bikeradar, the Welshman explained that discovering new places and giving them that adventurous touch that we all seek in cycling are the keys to keep going out to train every day.
Variety and adventure in training inspire Geraint Thomas at 38 years old
"Never stop adventuring," with this simple phrase Geraint Thomas explained his secret to continue enjoying cycling and training after 18 years as a professional. A phrase that he puts into practice by traveling to new places or discovering new things that ultimately make the effort and suffering of training much more bearable.
A feeling that connects with that sense of freedom and being able to go further from home that almost all of us who ride a bike felt in our early rides. In his particular case, Geraint Thomas explained that he usually goes out with a general idea of where he wants to go, but once on the bike, he improvises and changes the route constantly according to what he feels like, unlike many cyclists who almost always do the same routes.

Only if he travels to a completely new place does he plan the routes, that is, without reaching the extremes of companions like Ben Swift, of whom he says has the routes studied to the millimeter.
In fact, he highlights that he has been pedaling in such atypical places as New Zealand, touring dream places which, on the other hand, does not prevent him from continuing to do the work that is necessary, but in new and cool places. Geraint Thomas also recounts that this year he was training for the first time in cyclist destinations such as Sierra Nevada and Andorra or that he traveled to Los Angeles, the latter on the recommendation of his former teammate Cameron Wurf.
However, there are some places that he repeats, such as cycling in his native Wales during Christmas or his trips to Tenerife in April or May, one of his usual training destinations where he has sections to test himself to know his true fitness level.
Like most professionals, he also admits that riding in a group makes training much more fun, although obviously, when it comes to doing more specific workouts, he has to go out alone, something that Geraint Thomas appreciates from the point of view that it allows him to enjoy peace and tranquility, alone with his thoughts.
Making each bike ride have its own story, some stories or something new that you have experienced, that you can then tell your family or friends when you get home is what makes cycling a unique sport.
