Will Pogacar have an immediate response? Schedule, profile, and favorites for stage 2 of the 2026 Tour de France

Road 05/07/26 03:01 Migue A.

The 2026 Tour de France has just begun, and the favorites are already forced to show their cards. The team time trial in Barcelona left Jonas Vingegaard as the first yellow jersey and, above all, placed Tadej Pogacar in an unusual situation: having to recover time from the second day of the race.

Stage 2 of the 2026 Tour de France: Pogacar seeks answers on the Montjuïc circuit

The stage between Tarragona and Barcelona will not be a day of transition. Quite the opposite. The route designed by the organization again concentrates all the tension in the final kilometers and threatens to offer another direct duel between the top contenders for the yellow jersey.

Schedule and key points of stage 2

  • Start: Tarragona, 13:55 h
  • Expected finish: Barcelona, 18:00 h
  • Distance: 169 km
  • Accumulated elevation gain: approximately 2,000 meters

Tarragona as prologue, Montjuïc as judge

The first half of the stage runs along the Mediterranean and does not present major mountainous difficulties. The first 80 kilometers are relatively comfortable for the peloton, although the crosswind could create moments of tension before the race enters the decisive terrain.

The first scoring climb will come at the Cota de Begues, a second-category climb with 6.6 kilometers at 5.6%. It does not seem sufficient to break the race, but it will serve to harden the legs before the conclusion.

The real selection will begin when the riders enter Barcelona.

With about 30 kilometers to go, a circuit will start that brings Montjuïc back into the spotlight, although this time in a much more demanding way than in the opening time trial. The riders will have to tackle the ascent to Montjuïc Castle three times, an ascent of about 1.8 kilometers with an average gradient of over 8% and ramps that reach double-digit percentages. The last summit will be crested just 2.5 kilometers from the finish.

A finish designed for explosive riders

If the team time trial favored the more powerful teams, this second stage is designed for cyclists capable of combining endurance, explosiveness, and technique.

The three ascents to Montjuïc, combined with an urban circuit full of curves and a fast, technical descent before the finish, will make positioning a fundamental factor. Those who arrive poorly positioned at the foot of the climb could lose the stage even before they start climbing.

Moreover, the finish will not be completely flat. After the last descent, the riders will face a slightly uphill final straight that will further punish the legs after a cumulative circuit.

Pogacar has an immediate opportunity

The general classification after the first stage has left us with the feeling that Vingegaard is the leader and Pogacar is forced to react.

The 12 seconds separating the Slovenian from the Danish rider is not a significant difference in absolute terms, but it is enough for UAE Team Emirates-XRG to have reasons to harden the race.

The profile fits perfectly with Pogacar's characteristics. The climbs are too short for Vingegaard to impose a superiority based solely on climbing and explosive enough to favor the violent accelerations of the world champion.

The big unknown will be how much risk UAE is willing to take. If Pogacar decides to attack from afar, the circuit could turn into a battle for the general classification from the second day.

Vingegaard arrives with confidence

Visma's victory in the first stage also changes the tactical scenario. Vingegaard no longer needs to recover ground and can ride defensively if the situation requires it. Moreover, he will have especially dangerous teammates for this type of route, starting with Matteo Jorgenson, one of the most complete riders in the peloton on broken terrain.

The American could even become an offensive asset if UAE hardens the race too early.

Ayuso, Evenepoel, and Pidcock also have something to say

Behind the two big favorites, several names appear that can aspire both to the stage and to gain time in the general classification.

Juan Ayuso started the Tour with a solid fourth place and is only 16 seconds from the lead. The Valencian knows the Catalan roads perfectly and arrives at a stage that fits well with his characteristics.

Remco Evenepoel faces a stage less favorable than the time trial, but explosive enough to stay among the best if he can overcome the usual positioning problems in nervous finishes.¡

We should also keep an eye on Tom Pidcock, possibly one of the most dangerous riders in a circuit like this due to his ability to accelerate on short climbs and make a difference on descents.

And if the group arrives relatively large to the final straight, names like Mathieu van der Poel, Romain Grégoire, or Dorian Godon could enter the fight for victory.

The first stage served to distribute the yellow jersey. The second may begin to reveal who has really arrived at the Tour with the best legs. And all signs point to Montjuïc being the scene of another chapter between Pogacar and Vingegaard.
