Vingegaard strikes first in the Tour: Visma conquers Barcelona, and Pogacar loses 12 seconds in their first battle
The 2026 Tour de France already has its first leader and also its first moral victor. Jonas Vingegaard emerged strengthened from the unprecedented team time trial in Barcelona after Team Visma Lease a Bike executed a perfect day that ended up becoming a direct duel against Tadej Pogacar. The Dane will wear the yellow jersey tomorrow after surpassing the Slovenian by 12 seconds in the general classification.
Jonas Vingegaard claims the first yellow of the Tour after a Visma exhibition
The first stage was not decided solely by collective strength. The novel format of this team time trial, where each rider receives their own individual time, turned the last kilometers into a real battle among leaders. And there, Vingegaard was the strongest.

INEOS set the bar very high
For much of the afternoon, it seemed that victory would remain in the hands of Netcompany INEOS. The British team flew through the wide avenues of Barcelona thanks to the work of specialists like Filippo Ganna, Tobias Foss, and Joshua Tarling.

Despite losing Kevin Vauquelin due to a flat tire in the final part, INEOS recorded an impressive time of 21:55 that shattered the previous reference set by Alpecin-Premier Tech and temporarily placed Ganna in the hot seat.
Earlier, Mathieu van der Poel had been one of the protagonists of the day by pushing Alpecin to the best provisional time thanks to a great final climb to Montjuïc.
Ayuso came close to yellow at home
One of the most anticipated moments of the afternoon came with the departure of Lidl-Trek. The team was competitive from the start and even led at some intermediate points, although they suffered a significant setback when Mattias Skjelmose lost contact after suffering a flat tire.
Juan Ayuso had the opportunity to fight for the yellow jersey on the final slopes of Montjuïc, but ended up 16 seconds behind INEOS's time. The Spaniard, racing in his hometown, delivered a solid performance, although it was insufficient to seize the lead.
Evenepoel salvages the situation
It was not an easy day for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe either.
The team started below expectations and was already 12 seconds behind the best times at the first intermediate point. On the final climb, Remco Evenepoel tried to minimize damage with an acceleration that even left Florian Lipowitz behind, but the world time trial champion ended up losing 19 seconds compared to the best time.
Lipowitz, for his part, lost some additional seconds after falling behind in the final meters.
Visma executes the perfect plan
The real exhibition came with the penultimate departure of the day.
Visma Lease a Bike went from less to more and reached the decisive zone with several of its key men still alongside Vingegaard. Matteo Jorgenson and Davide Piganzoli made the last relays before leaving the Dane in front of the final slopes. At that moment, the decisive move came.
Vingegaard launched his offensive in the last few hundred meters and shattered INEOS's reference. The Dane crossed the finish line seven seconds faster than the time that until then seemed unbeatable and virtually placed himself in yellow.

Pogacar responds… but falls short
Only UAE Team Emirates-XRG remained to depart. The Pogacar team started well, although they were already losing some seconds at the intermediate points compared to Visma. Everything was pending on the final climb, where the Slovenian once again demonstrated his usual explosiveness.

Pogacar attacked violently on the last slopes of the Olympic Stadium and managed to recover some of the lost ground, but it was not enough to neutralize the advantage accumulated by Vingegaard.
The final result left the reigning Tour champion 12 seconds behind his great rival after just 19.6 kilometers of racing.
A small difference on paper, but significant as it was the first direct confrontation between the two main favorites for the title.

Barcelona promised a first contact and ended up offering the first great statement of intent of the Tour. Vingegaard struck first, Visma demonstrated that they arrive with an extraordinarily solid block, and Pogacar, for the first time in a long time, is forced to chase from the second day of racing.
