Vingegaard says goodbye to 2026: his collarbone fracture prevents him from competing again this season

Jonas Vingegaard will not compete again in 2026. Visma Lease a Bike has confirmed that the Danish rider has ended his season due to the consequences of the clavicle fracture he suffered during the Tour de France. The injury has delayed his return to training, and both the rider and the team have decided to rule out new objectives to focus entirely on preparing for 2027.

Jonas Vingegaard will not compete again this season

Jonas Vingegaard's 2026 season has ended earlier than expected. Almost a month after his fall and withdrawal from the Tour de France, Visma Lease a Bike has announced that their leader will not race again for the remainder of the year.

The reason remains the hard fall that forced Vingegaard to abandon the Tour de France 2026. The Dane fell during the 15th stage, with 18 kilometers to go to Plateau de Solaison. Vingegaard lost control of the bike while negotiating a roundabout and crashed into the curb. After the accident, he had to withdraw with his arm immobilized.

Ultimately, that fall had more significant consequences than initially thought for the rest of his calendar. Vingegaard suffered a clavicle fracture, and although he had already planned a recovery period after the Tour, the injury has delayed the moment he could start training normally.

According to Visma Lease a Bike, this delay makes it impossible for him to regain the necessary level in the short term to consider new competitive objectives before the end of 2026.

"After a long and intense period of competition, a recovery period was already planned after the Tour de France. Due to the clavicle injury, the start of my training has been delayed, and it is not possible to return to my best level in the next period", explains Vingegaard.

Visma and Vingegaard are already focusing on 2027

Vingegaard will dedicate the coming months to fully recover and gradually rebuild his preparation. For now, no major objectives for 2027 have been announced, something that the rider and team will decide in the coming months.

"The goal is to prepare optimally for the goals of the 2027 season. I will discuss those specific objectives with the team during the next period", assures the Dane.

Visma supports the decision. Marc Reef recalls that the team had already planned to review Vingegaard's calendar once the Tour was over and that, considering both the accumulated load during the year and the clavicle fracture, they have deemed it not worth trying to return to competition in 2026.

"After an intense period, with many days of competition and the clavicle fracture that Jonas suffered in the Tour de France, the best thing for him is to focus on 2027," explains Reef. The team will now work with the rider to establish both the progression of training and the objectives for the next campaign.

A season with three major victories before the accident

The withdrawal from the Tour and this early end leave the 2026 season clearly divided into two parts for Vingegaard. Before the accident, the Dane had achieved some of the most important victories on the calendar and, in particular, had added to his palmarès a victory that he was still missing.

Vingegaard won Paris-Nice and the Volta a Catalunya before triumphing in the Giro d'Italia, making the first half of his season one of the most successful of his career.

Then came the Tour de France, where he re-emerged as one of the top contenders for the general classification. His race ended abruptly on July 19 in the stage finishing at Plateau de Solaison. At the time of the accident, he was riding with the group of favorites, and the day was set to offer another direct confrontation in the mountains with Tadej Pogacar.
