The Tour does not forgive: two yellow jerseys among the 16 withdrawals from the race so far

The 2026 Tour de France enters its final week with a peloton very different from the one that set off on July 4 in Barcelona. After more than two weeks of competition, falls, illnesses, and the enormous wear of the race have already caused sixteen withdrawals, including that of Jonas Vingegaard, the only one who seemed capable of challenging Tadej Pogačar

The 113th edition of the Tour de France started with 184 cyclists spread across 23 teams, but on the brink of the final week, only 168 riders remain in the race. Since the start of the event, a total of 16 cyclists have withdrawn for various reasons: falls, illnesses, fractures, concussions, and even for finishing outside the maximum allowed time cut.

The first withdrawals came practically from the start of the Tour. Clément Berthet (Groupama-FDJ United) suffered a concussion during the first stage and could not start the next day. Shortly after, Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Intermarché) withdrew sick during the third day, while Kelland O’Brien (Team Jayco AlUla) became the first rider eliminated for finishing outside the time limit at the end of the fourth stage.

The sixth day was, until that moment, the toughest for the peloton. Bert Van Lerberghe (Soudal Quick-Step) withdrew after a fall, Cian Uijtdebroeks (Movistar Team) left the race due to illness and Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) also could not complete the stage. Additionally, Alex Molenaar (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) did not start after suffering a concussion.

One day later, another very notable withdrawal occurred. Torstein Træen (Uno-X Mobility), who was wearing the yellow jersey, could not continue after the serious fall suffered on the descent of the Tourmalet, where he suffered a concussion and several rib fractures.

The list of withdrawals continued to grow during the second week. Matteo Trentin (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) did not start the tenth stage due to illness and Chris Harper (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) did the same the next day after fracturing his thumb in the hard fall suffered on the descent of Puy Mary.

Before the start of the fourteenth stage, Ramses Debruyne (Alpecin-Premier Tech) withdrew due to illness, while Anthon Charmig (Uno-X Mobility) was eliminated that same day for finishing outside the maximum time.

The biggest shock to the general classification came during the fifteenth stage. Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma Lease a Bike), second in the standings and main rival of Tadej Pogačar, had to withdraw from the race after fracturing his collarbone. On that same day, Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) and Tom Van Asbroeck (NSN Cycling Team) also withdrew.

The last recorded withdrawal so far is that of Lars Craps (Lotto Intermarché), who will not start stage 16 due to illness.

Thus, as the Tour de France faces its final week of competition, 168 riders remain in the race with the goal of reaching Paris, while another sixteen have already had to say goodbye to the Grande Boucle.
