The laces are faster than the BOA: new Trek RSL Lace Road and RSL Lace MTB

Trek is once again betting on laces in competition with the launch of the new RSL Lace Road and RSL Lace MTB, two shoes developed to maximize aerodynamic efficiency and reduce weight compared to BOA closure models. The brand claims that the new road version is even faster in the wind tunnel than the current RSL Road and mentions measurable gains in terms of watts.

The launch comes at a time when several brands are reviving the lace system for their more performance-oriented models. Beyond the classic aesthetic, Trek argues that this system allows for a more precise and uniform fit over the foot, also eliminating external elements that slightly penalize aerodynamics.

According to data provided by the brand itself, the new Trek RSL Lace Road saves an average of 1.84 watts compared to the RSL Road with BOA closure. To achieve this, Trek has worked on a cleaner and more compact silhouette, in addition to incorporating aerodynamic covers called Aero Lace Covers that completely hide the laces during use.

Weight has also been one of the major focuses of development. The road version weighs 211 grams, while the MTB variant weighs 272 grams. In both cases, they use a sole made entirely of OCLV carbon, Trek's premium material, aiming to maximize power transfer and reduce losses during pedaling.

Another important aspect of the design is the new Watt Lock internal structure, created to stabilize the foot inside the shoe and prevent movement under high efforts. Trek combines this system with its METNET technology, designed to allow some elasticity in specific areas of the upper and relieve pressure on the metatarsals during long rides or intense efforts.

The Pro Last shape remains the ergonomic base of the model and is clearly oriented towards competitive use, although Trek insists that the goal was to maintain a high level of comfort even on long rides.

In the MTB version, Trek practically transfers the same philosophy to a shoe designed for competitive XC and gravel, although for now this model will only be available online and in selected North American markets.

The new Trek RSL Lace Road is now available through the Trek dealer network and on the brand's official website for a price of 349.99 euros.
