Still got it: Dumoulin flies in New York to set a new personal best
The Dutch former cyclist Tom Dumoulin continues to improve his records as a long-distance runner. The winner of the 2017 Giro d'Italia has completed the New York Marathon in 2:27:12, lowering his mark by more than two minutes from the time he achieved just a year ago in his debut at the distance.
Tom Dumoulin breaks his personal record in the New York Marathon and runs the 42 km in 2 hours and 27 minutes
At 35 years old and four years after leaving professional cycling, Tom Dumoulin has once again demonstrated his capacity for endurance sports. The Dutchman participated on Sunday, November 1, in the New York Marathon, where he completed the 42.195 kilometers in 2 hours, 27 minutes, and 12 seconds, at an average pace of approximately 3:29 min/km.
His new mark represents an improvement of 2 minutes and 12 seconds compared to the 2:29:24 he achieved in the Amsterdam Marathon in 2025. Furthermore, he accomplished this on a course like New York's, known for its bridges, elevation changes, and constant pace variations.

For Dumoulin, the race also had a special component. The New York Marathon was one of the events he wanted to compete in for a long time, and after crossing the finish line, he shared his satisfaction on Instagram.
"An incredible experience. I enjoyed every minute! What a day... I feel lucky to have been able to share it with my family", wrote the former cyclist, who was accompanied by his partner, Maxime Nieman, and his son Oscar.
The effort, however, also left its consequences. “For the next two days, I will be dragging my feet through the streets of New York instead of walking, but it was worth it,” he added humorously.
From suffering in Amsterdam to improving his record in New York
Just a year ago, the former world time trial champion aimed to finish under two and a half hours and succeeded, although he ended up paying dearly for his initial approach. He passed the half marathon in approximately 1 hour and 9 minutes, but the lack of specific experience running long distances took its toll during the second half.
After the race, he acknowledged that he had started too fast and that, despite having the aerobic capacity to maintain that effort, his muscles were still not adapted to the demands of running a marathon. He even had to stop several times due to cramps.

A year later, in New York, he has significantly lowered that record, confirming that his adaptation to running continues to progress.
Dumoulin retired from professional cycling in 2022 after a career in which he won the 2017 Giro d'Italia, the world time trial championship that same year, and the Olympic silver medal in Tokyo, in addition to finishing second in the 2018 Tour de France.
Since then, he has maintained his relationship with cycling as an analyst for the Dutch television NOS, while finding a new sporting activity in running. His result in New York demonstrates that, although he no longer competes in the professional peloton, he is still capable of achieving outstanding records in endurance events.
