The race was marked from the start by the challenging terrain conditions. The storms from the previous night left numerous muddy areas that caused falls, mechanical failures, and the first significant selections even before the race reached its halfway point. As the course became tougher, a group of favorites managed to break away and take control of the race.
The final selection occurred after the second aid station, when Gomez Villafañe, Schreurs, Klöser, and Decker managed to move ahead. Shortly after, Onweller staged a long solo chase to catch up with the leading quartet and form the group that would ultimately contest the victory. At that moment, they already had more than six minutes of advantage over their pursuers.
From there, the race entered a phase of constant wear. The five collaborated to maintain the difference while facing new muddy areas, strong gusts of wind, and some of the toughest sections of the course. Specialized also had a numerical advantage thanks to the presence of Gomez Villafañe and Schreurs, a circumstance that influenced the group's strategy during the final hours.
The tension remained until the final kilometers. Schreurs attempted to break the race several times before reaching Emporia, but neither she nor Klöser managed to create any gaps. The victory was ultimately decided in a sprint after more than ten hours of effort, where Gomez Villafañe took advantage of her speed to surpass her rivals and secure her second triumph in the most prestigious gravel race in the world.
