New Trek Domane+ SLR 2023, electric and lightweight
After the presentation a few weeks ago of its new Trek Domane, the Waterloo-based company is introducing an electric version weighing just over 11 kilos that maintains all the qualities of the latest generation of Trek's long-distance bike.
Trek Domane+ SLR, the paradigm of versatility
In the quest to offer a bike without limitations raised by the new generation of the Trek Domane SLR, the most versatile bike in the Trek range that was presented just a few weeks ago, now comes the electric version, called Domane+ SLR, with which Trek intends not only to expand the possibilities of the bike but also the number of potential users who can enjoy pedalling on it.
Is it really electric?
At first glance, the new Trek Domane+ SLR is virtually identical to its conventional sibling. Only the slightly more generous tube volumes - very little else - indicate that this is an e-bike.

A bike that maintains the guidelines set for the new generation of Domane, from the OCLV 800 Series frame, the highest quality carbon used by Trek, the same material used to manufacture its competition bikes.
Also identical to the conventional model is the new design of the IsoSpeed absorption system that isolates the seat tube from the rest of the bike. This new version eliminates the adjustment of the previous two generations of Domane and integrates the seat post clamp, which is now conventional, in the same area. All this results in a reduction in the weight of the frame.
However, you have to look at it from the left side to discover the presence of the TQ motor in the bottom bracket area that provides pedal assistance. The presence of the TQ motor and the need to locate the battery in the down tube means that this Domane+ SLR obviously lacks the storage system that its siblings include in this location.
In all other respects, the Domane+ SLR is like a traditional bike, something that Trek has taken special care of, taking care of details such as the bottom bracket width in order to maintain a reduced Q factor that does not affect the rider's pedalling despite the presence of the motor, or the Endurance geometry itself.
As with its conventional sibling, this electric version aims for a multi-purpose use that goes beyond the road. Proof of this are the very generous wheel arches, which accept 40 mm tyres and allow us to use this Domane+ SLR as a real gravel bike.
The right kind of assistance
To assist pedalling on this Trek Domane+ SLR, the brand has resorted to a TQ HPR50 motor located in the bottom bracket area. A motor that we have already seen in the brand's Fuel EXe model. It is capable of providing a continuous 250 W of assistance with peaks of up to 300 W and a torque of 50 Nm.
It comes with a 360 Wh battery, which gives it an estimated maximum range of 96 km in Eco mode, extendable up to 145 km if we use the Range Extender auxiliary battery, which can be placed as if it were a jerrycan of liquid.
A motor and battery set that weighs just 3.9 kg, and has an internal operation that is completely different from the gear systems found in most motors on the market. The TQ HPR50 works with what they call Harmonic Pin Ring, which instead of using the usual planetary gears to adapt the rotational speed of the electric motor to the cyclist's cadence, uses a single gear surrounded by a wider ring with a different number of teeth that in a single step adapts the revolutions, dispensing with a lot of moving parts and, therefore, friction.
The HPR50 has three fully customisable operating modes via a mobile App. Trek has also integrated a useful display on the top tube, just behind the headset, which allows us to keep an eye on the battery level and selected assistance mode at all times, which we can change directly from the auxiliary buttons located on the gear levers.
Of course, assistance is limited as standard to the 25 km/h specified by European legislation.
Trek Domane+ SLR: Set-ups and prices
The very detailed equipment makes it clear that Trek's intention is not to consider this electric version of its Domane as a second-rate bike. 6 mounting options, with Shimano or SRAM electronic groupsets and Aeolus carbon wheels that have nothing to envy from its catalogue companions. By the way, as a curiosity, the SRAM-mounted versions come in single chainring configuration and with the XPLR rear derailleur specification and gravel tyres, while the Shimano mounts use a dual chainring with road tyres and chainrings.
