New DEORE XT PD-M8220 and PD-MT520 pedals: more control for trail riding and a replacement for one of its most popular SPDs

Shimano continues to expand the renewal of its MTB catalog with the launch of two new automatic SPD pedals. On one hand, the DEORE XT PD-M8220, developed for trail and all mountain, aims to offer a more stable platform and greater control on technical terrain. Alongside them, the PD-MT520 make their debut, set to replace the veteran PD-M520, one of the most popular models from the Japanese brand over the last few decades.

Although both share Shimano's characteristic double-sided SPD system, each is aimed at a very different type of user.

DEORE XT PD-M8220: more support and stability for technical trail

The main novelty of this presentation is the new DEORE XT PD-M8220, pedals designed for cyclists seeking greater control when the terrain becomes more demanding.

Compared to the more compact SPD models aimed at XC, Shimano has developed a wider platform around the automatic mechanism. The goal is to increase the contact surface between the shoe and the pedal to achieve a more solid feeling of support both while pedaling and in situations where the cyclist needs to momentarily take their foot off.

The brand has also incorporated a raised surface around the SPD mechanism and four adjustable pins that improve grip when pedaling unclipped. This is a solution directly inspired by the XTR trail pedals and designed for common situations on technical trails, such as tight turns, rock passages, or areas where it is necessary to quickly place the foot back down.

Another aspect that Shimano has worked on is the speed of engagement. The new PD-M8220 has been optimized to use the new CL-MT001 cleats, which allow for multidirectional entry and facilitate engagement from different angles, something especially useful when needing to resume pedaling after overcoming an obstacle or a complicated maneuver.

In terms of durability, the new XT incorporates a reinforced outer cage that protects the mechanism from impacts against stones or roots, in addition to Shimano's usual sealed bearing system and improved sealing to protect internal components from mud, water, and dust.

The declared weight is 472 grams per pair.

New PD-MT520 pedals: the successor to the popular PD-M520

The second novelty is the new PD-MT520, a model that takes over from the well-known PD-M520, probably one of the most used SPD pedals by mountain, gravel, and touring cyclists for years.

In this case, Shimano has opted to maintain the philosophy that made the M520 a success. The new pedal retains the double-sided SPD design, the release tension adjustment, and the sealed construction that has characterized this model since its early generations.

The main differences are found in the update of the exterior design and a more robust and modern aesthetic, aligned with the rest of Shimano's current range.

The PD-MT520 is designed as a versatile option for recreational MTB, gravel, bikepacking, urban commuting, or any user looking for a simple, reliable, and low-maintenance automatic pedal. Shimano has optimized it to work with the SM-SH51 cleats, the most widespread within the SPD ecosystem.

Its declared weight is 380 grams per pair and it will be available in black and silver finishes.
