Mireia Benito is the new road champion of Spain after also winning the time trial

Mireia Benito closed this Saturday a perfect Spanish Championship by also winning the road race held in Sabiñánigo (Huesca). The AG Insurance-Soudal rider, who last Thursday had achieved her fifth consecutive national time trial title, now added the red and yellow road jersey to sign the first double of her career.

The Catalan triumphed after 129.7 kilometers of competition on a day marked by heat, accumulated fatigue, and the long breakaway of Maite Urteaga (Eulen-Amenabar), which forced the main favorites to chase for much of the day.

Urteaga animated the race from the first kilometers

The race was held on a 26.5-kilometer circuit that the riders had to complete five laps, accumulating a total of 129.7 kilometers. The main selection point was the climb to Latas, 3.3 kilometers at 4.8%.

The first major offensive came very early. Maite Urteaga broke away solo and gradually increased her lead to over three minutes on a peloton that was losing riders as the kilometers passed.

Behind, the favorites were being selected until the chasing group was reduced to riders like Mireia Benito, Sara Martín, and Paula Ostiz (Movistar Team), Mavi García (UAE Team ADQ), and Sandra Alonso (Eneicat-Be Call).

The breakaway was neutralized with less than five kilometers to go

Urteaga's lead held for much of the race. Even with just over 30 kilometers to go, she still had more than two minutes of margin over the pursuers.

However, the work of the group of favorites eventually paid off. About 20 kilometers from the finish, Benito, García, Martín, Ostiz, and Alonso managed to break away definitively from the rest of the contenders and began to reduce the gap until they caught the breakaway with less than five kilometers to go.

With Urteaga neutralized, the race was completely open to be contested among the six riders leading the event.

Benito launched the decisive attack on the final climb

The resolution came on the final ascent towards the finish in Sabiñánigo. Mireia Benito attacked first and managed to open a gap that none of her rivals could close.

Behind, Sara Martín and Paula Ostiz completed the podium for Movistar Team, while Mavi García fell just short of the medals after a race in which she was one of the most active riders.

After the victory, Benito acknowledged the difficulty of interpreting such a changing race:

“I can't believe it. It was a very chaotic race. I thought everything was decided because there was no collaboration. It was very difficult to understand the race dynamics”.

The new Spanish champion also explained what led her to attack in the decisive meters:

“I simply decided to try and didn't want to hold anything back. I wanted to go home with the feeling of having fought until the end. It's a dream come true”.

With this victory, Benito adds the national road title to a palmarès in which she already had four Spanish time trial championships before achieving the one this week in Sabiñánigo.
