Lucinda Brand wins the 2026 European Cyclocross Championships after controversial penalty for Marie Schreiber
The 2026 European Cyclo-cross Championship has ended with an unexpected outcome in the elite women's race. Marie Schreiber crossed the finish line in first position after sprinting past Lucinda Brand, but a decision by the officials changed the result. The Luxembourger was relegated to second place for an irregular maneuver, and Brand ended up claiming her second continental title.
Controversy at the European Cyclo-cross: Schreiber wins, but the judges award gold to Brand
The first day of the European Cyclo-cross in Zeddam (Netherlands) concluded with one of those situations where the result is not decided on the ground, but several minutes after crossing the finish line. Lucinda Brand has been crowned European Cyclo-cross champion 2026, although it was initially Marie Schreiber who celebrated victory.

The Luxembourger had an excellent race, attacking from the first meters and especially taking advantage of the demanding staircase of the circuit. After holding off the best Dutch specialists for seven laps, Schreiber managed to prevail in a very tight sprint against the reigning world champion.
However, the joy was short-lived. The officials reviewed the footage of the finish and deemed that Schreiber had changed her trajectory during the sprint, obstructing Brand's progress. After more than fifteen minutes of deliberation and listening to the protagonists, they decided to relegate the Luxembourg rider to second place.
Brand thus inherited the European gold, while Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado completed the podium.

Marie Schreiber put the favorites under pressure from the first lap
The race began with a very different script than what could be expected from a Dutch selection that gathered some of the best specialists in the world.
While Lucinda Brand and Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado fell behind at the start, Marie Schreiber quickly took the initiative. Her first attack came on the long staircase that the organization had restored for this championship.
The nearly 100 steps became the Luxembourger's great ally, as she opened gaps every time she had to shoulder her bike. A particularly striking superiority on a circuit where it was difficult to gain significant advantages in the other sectors.
Precisely, the spectacular staircase of the Zeddam circuit, rebuilt for this European Championship and with a 25-degree incline, had been pointed out as one of the decisive obstacles of the championship.

Brand and Alvarado had to organize a chase that allowed them to gradually reduce Schreiber's lead. After two laps, the difference was 14 seconds, but the Luxembourger continued to gain ground with each pass through the stairs.
The race also left delicate moments for the favorites. Brand suffered a fall on a technical descent that allowed Alvarado to catch up with Schreiber, although the world champion managed to recover and reconnect with both.
With three laps to go, the three riders were already riding together at the front, with a lead of nearly a minute over their pursuers. The podium seemed decided, but the order of the medals still needed to be resolved.
An Alvarado fall left gold in the hands of Brand and Schreiber
The last lap began with the three contenders still together. Brand had tried to increase the pace in the sectors where she could leverage her power, while Schreiber continued to show superior speed on the staircase.
Alvarado, for her part, began to show signs of fatigue, although she managed to stay with the two leaders until a fall in a right-hand turn ended her chances of contesting victory. The title was reduced to a head-to-head between Brand and Schreiber.
The Luxembourger faced the final straight in the lead and launched a long sprint. Brand tried to overtake her by using her wheel, but Schreiber managed to maintain the first position until crossing the finish line.
What seemed like a historic victory for Luxembourg ended up becoming a bitter disappointment. The images showed that Schreiber had moved laterally during the sprint, closing off part of the space that Brand was trying to progress through. The officials interpreted that the maneuver had harmed the Dutch rider and changed the classification.
Thus, Lucinda Brand adds her second European Championship, after the one she won in 2021, and adds another title to a season that had already begun with several important victories.
Schreiber is left with the silver medal after being one of the strongest riders throughout the race, while Alvarado takes the bronze despite her fall in the final lap.
