Jonathan Milan saves his Giro in Rome and Vingegaard conquers his first Giro d'Italia

The Giro d'Italia 2026 came to a close this Sunday in Rome with a sprint finish that allowed Jonathan Milan to finally achieve the victory he had been seeking throughout the race. The Italian sprinter from Lidl-Trek won the final stage after surpassing Paul Penhoët and thwarting Paul Magnier's attempt to finish the round with a fourth stage win.

The day was marked by the usual festive atmosphere of the final stage. Before the start, the peloton paid tribute to the leaders of the various classifications: Jonas Vingegaard wore the definitive pink jersey, Giulio Ciccone the mountain jersey (azzura), Paul Magnier the points classification jersey (ciclamino), and Afonso Eulálio the white jersey for best young rider.

After the ceremonial initial lap, the race headed towards Ostia and returned to the historic center of Rome to tackle eight laps of a 9.5-kilometer urban circuit. As is often the case in these types of stages, attacks were plentiful during the final kilometers, although none managed to prevent the expected outcome.

Among the most active were Filippo Ganna, Matteo Sobrero, Jasper Stuyven, Victor Campenaerts, and Rémy Rochas. Ganna's offensive, alongside Sobrero and Stuyven, was particularly dangerous with less than ten kilometers to go, opening a gap of nearly 20 seconds. However, the sprinters' teams kept the chase under control and neutralized the breakaway before the final kilometer.

At the finish, which was slightly uphill and very technical, Milan finally found the space that had eluded him in previous opportunities. Magnier got boxed in during the decisive meters, and Dylan Groenewegen lost speed in the final stretch, leaving the Italian a clear path to raise his arms in the Italian capital.

The victory allowed Milan to end a Giro edition on a high note, in which he had accumulated several honorable positions without managing to secure a win. For Lidl-Trek, it also represented an important reward after three weeks in which the team also shone with Giulio Ciccone, the winner of the mountain classification.

Behind, Jonas Vingegaard crossed the finish line without any surprises alongside his Visma-Lease a Bike teammates to officially confirm his final triumph in the Giro d'Italia 2026. The Dane completed a dominant performance, with five stage wins and absolute control of the race since he donned the pink jersey in the mountain stage of Pila.

With this success, Vingegaard joins an elite group of riders capable of winning all three Grand Tours. After his previous victories in the Tour de France and Vuelta a España, the Giro was the only major title missing from his palmarès. The 2026 edition allowed him to complete that trilogy and confirm his status as one of the great dominators of current cycling.
