Finlay Tarling dies at 19 in the Volta a Portugal after a car accident

Cycling is in mourning for the passing of Finlay Tarling at the age of 19. The young British cyclist from the NSN Development Team lost his life this Friday after suffering a serious accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal 2026, contested between Melgaço and Fafe.

Tarling was also the younger brother of Josh Tarling, a rider for Netcompany-Ineos and one of the top British specialists against the clock. Finlay was taking his first steps in professional cycling and, like his brother, had already shown particularly outstanding abilities in time trials.

The accident occurred during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal, a 167-kilometer day finishing in Fafe. The race organization and the Portuguese Cycling Federation have confirmed Tarling's death following a "serious accident," although they have not yet officially detailed how it happened.

The most specific information comes from the Portuguese public television RTP, which states that Tarling was hit by a vehicle unrelated to the race that had entered the course and was traveling in the opposite direction to the cyclists.

According to the first reports published in Portugal, the accident occurred approximately 20 kilometers from the finish in Fafe. Tarling received assistance at the scene of the accident, but ultimately his life could not be saved.

The eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal was neutralized

After the severity of the accident became known, the race was immediately affected by what had happened. The organization decided to neutralize the rest of the stage to Fafe, while the peloton continued towards the finish without competing.

The podium ceremonies scheduled for this Friday were also canceled as a sign of respect.

"In this moment of deep sorrow, the organizers of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express their heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his teammates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones", the organization communicated.

The Volta a Portugal, whose 87th edition was set to continue over the weekend and finish on Sunday, also announced that it would provide more information when circumstances allowed.

NSN Cycling confirms the death of its young rider

The NSN Development Team, the team in which Tarling was competing in his second season, confirmed the news shortly after and published a statement remembering the young Briton.

"We are devastated to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling today at the Volta a Portugal. Fin was a very beloved member of our team, but above all, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to many people. We will miss him greatly."

The team also extended its condolences to his parents, Michael and Dawn, to his brother Josh, and to all his family and friends.

One of the young promises of British cycling

Originally from Ffos-y-ffin, Wales, Finlay Tarling came from a family closely linked to cycling and was beginning to build his own sporting career following in the footsteps of his older brother.

After excelling both on the road and on the track during his junior stage, Tarling signed a two-season contract with Israel-Premier Tech Academy, now known as NSN Development Team, to join the team in 2025.

During the 2026 season, he also had opportunities to compete with the main NSN structure in some races. Among them were O Gran Camiño and Boucles de la Mayenne.

One of his most notable results had come just a few weeks earlier. In June, he finished third in the British U23 time trial championship, confirming time trial abilities that inevitably reminded one of Josh Tarling.

He had also delivered good performances during the Tour of Rwanda, where he managed to finish second and fourth in two stages.

Finlay Tarling was only 19 years old and was still in the early stages of a career that pointed towards professional cycling. His death during the Volta a Portugal has caused deep shock in the peloton and in cycling.
