This is the Specialized time trial prototype Evenepoel plans to use to challenge Pogacar

Weeks before the Tour began, a leak from Remco Evenepoel’s inner circle suggested that Specialized was developing a new time trial bike for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe with the goal of having it ready in time for the time trials at the 2026 Tour de France. We were able to confirm this on the first day of racing in Barcelona.

Evenepoel's secret weapon for the Tour: Here's a look at the Specialized time-trial prototype for the world champion

From the first images of Evenepoel on this time-trial bike, it was already clear that it was a distinctly new prototype.

And although we haven’t yet been able to examine it in detail, the images reveal several differences compared to the current Shiv TT, a model that has been the brand’s benchmark for time trials for years.

The most obvious modification appears in the rear area of the frame. The seat tube hugs the rear wheel much closer, reducing the gap between the two elements to optimize airflow. Additionally, the back of the frame extends beyond the stays, a solution that recalls some of the industry's most recent aerodynamic trends.

A new seat attachment system completely integrated into the seat post also stands out. The traditional clamp disappears, and the entire structure looks much cleaner, eliminating material exposed to the wind and improving aerodynamic efficiency around the cyclist's legs.

In the front area, everything points to the evolution being primarily focused on reducing aerodynamic drag without altering the riders' position, as Kloeck had previously indicated.

A new Roval wheel to complete the package

The bike has not arrived alone. Along with the new frame, an unprecedented front Roval wheel with an extremely deep profile has also been seen, close to 90 millimeters according to initial estimates.

The wheel incorporates carbon spokes similar to those used in the latest Rapide CLX Sprint and seems specifically designed for time trial events, aiming to extract every possible aerodynamic gain.

All of this is part of Specialized's internal program “Project Black,” an initiative through which the brand uses its professional riders to develop and test products before their commercial launch.

Evenepoel debuted this prototype in Barcelona during the Tour’s team time trial, and he is expected to use it again today in the individual time trial on Stage 16. It will undoubtedly be a very special day, as he could solidify his second-place position in the overall standings—or who knows, maybe even close the gap with Pogacar in the general classification.
