Why do some cyclists from Visma have painted nails?

The premiere of the Giro d'Italia 2026 in Bulgaria left a curious image in the peloton. Jonas Vingegaard, the top favorite for the overall victory, appeared at the start of the first stage with one of his nails painted red, a gesture that some of his teammates at Visma Lease a Bike, like Davide Piganzoli, also adopted. Far from being an aesthetic issue or a simple anecdote, there was a solidarity campaign against child violence behind it.

Why Jonas Vingegaard and several Visma riders have started the Giro with a red-painted nail

The Danish cyclist is participating in the initiative “Stop vold!” (“Stop violence”), promoted by the Danish organization Borns Vilkar, dedicated to the protection of minors and the fight against child abuse. The campaign consists of painting one nail red as a symbol of support and visibility for a problem that, according to the foundation's own data, affects one in six children in Denmark.

The image of Vingegaard with the red nail quickly caught attention during the opening day of the Giro, especially since the Dane arrived at the race as one of the top favorites for the general classification. During a brief interview before the start, the rider explained the meaning of the gesture when asked directly about it. “It’s a good cause. It’s a cause related to the conditions of children in Denmark. One in six children suffers physical or psychological abuse from their parents. We want to fight against that. All children need to have good conditions at home. It’s a very important cause,” explained the leader of Visma.
