What is "Mission 8" and why INEOS could disappear from cycling?
The debut of the Netcompany INEOS Cycling Team at the 2026 Giro d'Italia could also mark the beginning of a much deeper transformation. Just a few days after officially presenting its new identity and colors, the British team publicly acknowledges that it is looking for a second main sponsor and that INEOS would even be willing to give up its role as title sponsor.
Ineos could disappear from the team's name: they are looking for a new sponsor to compete with UAE, Visma, or Decathlon
This search for a new sponsor perfectly reflects how the financial balance of the peloton has changed in a very short time. Teams like UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Visma | Lease a Bike, or Decathlon CMA CGM Team have raised the level of investment to figures that just a decade ago seemed impossible in this sport.
In this context, the structure led by Dave Brailsford is already working to attract a new main sponsor that would allow for an expanded team budget. The consequence could be historic because INEOS would even be willing to lose its presence in the official name of the formation.

The transformation is particularly striking because it was precisely INEOS that led modern cycling towards this budgetary escalation. Under the Team Sky era first and later with INEOS Grenadiers, the British team revolutionized scientific preparation, salaries, and talent acquisition with a financial capacity far superior to the rest.
The influx of capital from the United Arab Emirates, large technology groups, and international multinationals has caused a new inflation within the cycling market. The result is a WorldTour where the best riders, engineers, trainers, and specialists cost more and more money.
In recent weeks, the British team officially presented its new alliance with the Danish software and artificial intelligence company Netcompany, a deal of significant economic magnitude that has given rise to the current Netcompany INEOS Cycling Team. However, within the structure, they believe that this step is not enough.
Tom Hill, the team's commercial director, confirmed in statements to the podcast Leaders Worth Knowing reported by Cyclingnews that the team has returned to the market to incorporate another main sponsor. His statements also left a very revealing idea about the future of the project when he spoke of a possible “Netcompany-X,” implying that the second spot for naming is still open.

All of this is happening in parallel to a delicate financial moment for the INEOS group. Various British media point out that the company carries a debt close to 18 billion euros and in recent months has reduced investments in different sports areas. Businessman Jim Ratcliffe maintains his strong connection to cycling, but the model seems to be evolving towards a more financially shared structure and less dependent on a single company.
Hill himself insisted that INEOS will continue to be involved in the project in the long term, although the priority now is to expand the economic base to increase the team's competitive capacity.
The reality is that the peloton is currently experiencing a genuine arms race. The big teams are not only fighting to sign riders, but they are also investing millions in aerodynamics, nutrition, artificial intelligence, data analysis, simulation, biomechanics, or material development.
What is "Mission 8"
Within the British structure, the main goal remains to conquer a new Tour de France. Dave Brailsford has recently regained a much more focused role in cycling after reducing his involvement with Manchester United and the team is already working under the internal concept “Mission 8,” a direct reference to the pursuit of their eighth victory in the Grande Boucle.
Now the major sports blocks of the peloton handle gigantic budgets and have increasingly powerful sponsors. The entry of Netcompany was interpreted within the sector as one of the most important commercial moves in recent years, although it seems to have been just the first step of a much deeper restructuring.
