What has happened to Chris Froome? Has he retired?
The media silence of Chris Froome suggests that, after finishing his contract with Israel-Premier Tech and being unable to find a new team, the British cyclist, despite not having made any announcement, is effectively retired from professional cycling.

The total silence on Chris Froome's social media indicates that his retirement is a fact
When a cyclist of Chris Froome's caliber, a 4-time Tour de France winner, 2-time Vuelta a España winner, and 1-time Giro d'Italia winner, retires, it is most common to have a press conference or simply a statement certifying the end of his professional cycling activity. However, since the British cyclist made his last public appearance at the presentation of the 2026 edition of La Vuelta a España back in December, his media silence has been total.

His last post on Instagram dates back a month when he shared a video of a lively dinner with Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic, where he asks the question, “Does anyone know how many Grand Tour victories are sitting at the table?” Since then, silence, which contrasts with a cyclist who in recent years has been much more active on social media than on the road, where his performances have been completely mediocre in the ranks of Israel-Premier Tech.
During the presentation of La Vuelta, when asked by journalists present in Monaco, Chris Froome only limited himself to responding, “I’m still not ready to talk about my plans. But when I am, I will make sure to inform everyone”, but that communication has yet to occur.

The fact is that Chris Froome no longer has a contract with any professional cycling team since his contract with Israel-Premier Tech expired at the end of 2025, so despite not having formally announced his retirement, the reality is that at this moment the British cyclist is no longer a professional cyclist at the age of 40.
In fact, the reality is that Froome never returned to being the great cyclist who amazed us in all the Grand Tours he won. Who doesn’t remember that feat at the Col de la Finestre? The serious fall in 2019 when he fell off his time trial bike while reconnoitering the time trial of the Critérium du Dauphiné left him with aftereffects that, despite the unexpected and lucrative contract he secured with the Israel-Premier Tech team, never allowed him to perform at the level he was accustomed to. To make matters worse, last summer he suffered another serious fall that surely erased any minimal chance he might have had of continuing in cycling.

It is also surprising the inactivity of Chris Froome on social media when he had become an active publisher of videos on YouTube, in addition to being the face of several brands like iGPSport or the bike brand Factor, of which he is or was one of the owners. The media disappearance of the British cyclist is a mystery to which we hope to obtain some answers sooner or later.
