La Vuelta stage 5: Roquetes awaits the sprinters, but Puerto de Paüls could shake up the race

After the passage through Andorra, La Vuelta a España 2026 offers this Wednesday one of the few clear opportunities for the fast men. The fifth stage will take the peloton from Falset to Roquetes over 173.3 kilometers, with quite a bit of favorable terrain for the sprint but also a significant difficulty less than 30 kilometers from the finish: the Puerto de Paüls.

A stage for sprinters, but with a trap 25 km from the finish

The day will start on the winding roads of Priorat. The first kilometers from Falset will be hilly and should facilitate the formation of a breakaway, although the route will then smooth out on the way to the coast and the Ebro delta.

The central part will be much more favorable for the sprinter teams, but the open terrain may introduce the factor wind. If it blows hard enough in the delta area, positioning could become a problem long before reaching the only categorized climb of the day.

The race will become complicated again in the last 40 kilometers. Before the climb, several small hills will appear and, at 28.4 km from the finish, the Puerto de Paüls will begin, 3.5 kilometers at 7.1% with sections above 10%.

It is not a long climb, but it is tough enough for teams like Lidl-Trek or Visma-Lease a Bike to increase the pace and try to drop some of the heavier sprinters.

The summit will be 24.9 kilometers from Roquetes. After that, there will be a quick descent towards Xerta and much more favorable terrain to reorganize the chase. Riders who lose contact without too much delay will still have options to return to the group.

The finish will not be completely flat either. The last 800 meters rise slightly, and the last turn comes about 250 meters from the line, so positioning and the timing of the sprint will be especially important.

Brennan and Pedersen, main references

Matthew Brennan reappears among the main favorites after his decisive victory in Manosque. The stage is somewhat less selective than that one, but the Brit has already shown that he can handle broken terrain and maintains a huge speed on slightly uphill finishes.

Mads Pedersen may be the one most interested in toughening up the Puerto de Paüls. The Dane should handle the climb without problems, and a high pace could drop some faster rivals before the finish.

Visma also has Wout van Aert, who can act as a lead-out for Brennan or become the main option if the race breaks apart at Paüls. Kaden Groves and Jordi Meeus will also have options if they manage to get over the last difficulty with the front group.

Behind them are riders like Pau Miquel, Ben Turner, Orluis Aular, Bryan Coquard, or Axel Laurance, all capable of taking advantage of a reduced sprint. If the race breaks apart much more than expected, names like Finn Fisher-Black or even some rouleur who attacks after Paüls may find their opportunity.

After Pogačar's display in Andorra, stage 5 should return the spotlight to the fast men, although the Puerto de Paüls will prevent them from having a completely quiet day.
