La Vuelta stage 10: Van Aert and Pedersen face a great opportunity

The second week of La Vuelta a España kicks off with a stage that is difficult to categorize. The 184.7 kilometers between Alcaraz and Elche de la Sierra accumulate nearly 2,700 meters of elevation gain, but without major climbs. The terrain favors a large breakaway, although Wout van Aert, Mads Pedersen, and other fast riders may find an opportunity if their teams decide to control the race.

A stage without major climbs but practically no flat terrain

The route does not feature any particularly tough climbs, but rather a constant succession of bumps and rolling roads that can do a lot of damage as the kilometers go by.

The race will already start on ascending terrain before facing the Puerto del Peralejo, with 5.2 kilometers at 4.2%. Further ahead will be the Puerto de Ayna, another gentle climb of 7.7 kilometers at 4%.

These are not climbs capable of causing differences among the overall favorites, but they do provide a perfect terrain for a quality breakaway to form. And after the rest day, many teams will be interested in getting ahead.

The decisive part will come in the last 60 kilometers. After the intermediate sprint in Hellín, the road will continue with constant changes in gradient until reaching the Puerto de Socovos.

Its 9.8 kilometers at 3.5% should not pose problems for riders like Van Aert or Pedersen, although their situation within the last 25 kilometers could completely change the stage if any team decides to increase the pace.

The summit is located 21.5 kilometers from the finish. After that, there will be descending and rolling terrain, plus a final bump of approximately 1.7 kilometers at 5.5%. The last 4.5 kilometers rise slightly again before the arrival in Elche de la Sierra.

Van Aert and Pedersen facing a breakaway with many possibilities

The breakaway seems to have quite a few options. The route invites attacks, and it is unclear which team will take on the work necessary to ensure a grouped arrival over nearly 185 kilometers.

If the race ends up regrouping, Wout van Aert appears as one of the main references. He leads the points classification, and the profile of the stage favors him: he can easily handle the climbs, and the slightly uphill finish suits his characteristics better than a completely flat arrival.

Mads Pedersen is probably his main rival. The Dane has not yet shown the level he had in the Tour during this Vuelta, but a day of wear and a strong finish are precisely the type of scenario in which he tends to excel. Visma also has Matthew Brennan and Christophe Laporte, allowing them to play with several alternatives.

Bryan Coquard also arrives with the confidence of his victory in Xeraco, while Axel Laurance, Finn Fisher-Black, or Pau Miquel could particularly benefit if the group arrives reduced.

But the most likely scenario may be in the breakaway. Santiago Buitrago, Andreas Leknessund, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Magnus Cort, Ramses Debruyne, Iván Romeo, Pavel Sivakov, or Valentin Paret-Peintre are some of the riders with the characteristics to try to get ahead.

After the battle of Alto de Aitana, Enric Mas and the general classification contenders should have a relatively calm day. The fight of the day will likely be elsewhere: between a breakaway with many candidates and a few teams willing to work to allow Van Aert, Pedersen, and company to contest the victory.
