La Vuelta activates the heat protocol and drastically shortens stage 15 in Córdoba: new route and favorites

The 15th stage of the Vuelta a España 2026 will be completely affected by the extreme heat expected in Córdoba. The organization has activated the protocol for high temperatures and has shortened the stage by almost 80 kilometers, resulting in a much shorter and explosive stage of 110.2 km between Palma del Río and Córdoba. The Alto de Villaviciosa has been removed from the route, but two climbs and a final ascent remain that could favor both a strong breakaway and fast riders capable of overcoming the last climb.

The Vuelta a España 2026 has to take measures due to the heat in stage 15

The originally planned stage exceeded 180 kilometers, but forecasts of extreme temperatures in Andalusia have forced a complete change in the expected development of the day.

After a meeting of representatives from the organization, commissaires, teams, and riders, the Vuelta decided to activate the heat protocol and eliminate 79.5 kilometers from the route. The race will maintain the first kilometers of the original course before taking a variant that will allow avoiding a good part of the central area of the stage.

The result will be a day of only 110.2 kilometers, a distance that could make the race much more explosive than initially expected.

From Palma del Río, the peloton will face a first undulating part before overcoming the Puerto de la Forestal, a climb of approximately 6.7 kilometers at 4.1%. Its gradients should not cause a significant selection, but in such a short stage, it could become a key point for forming a large breakaway.

The major difference from the initially announced route is the removal of the Alto de Villaviciosa de Córdoba, which has been completely eliminated after the cut.

This leaves the Puerto Artafi as the main obstacle of the day. Its 5.9 kilometers are around 5.5-5.7% average gradient and come at a decisive part of the race. It is a sufficiently demanding climb to eliminate some sprinters, especially after two weeks of competition and with very high temperatures.

After cresting, there will still be several kilometers on favorable terrain before the final descent towards Córdoba.

The approximately 8 final kilometers will be practically flat, so a small group could organize to catch the attackers. However, the new format of just 110 kilometers may make it much more difficult to control the race: attacks are likely to start very early, and there will be less time to correct tactical errors.

For the general classification men, it should be a relatively calm day before the second rest day. Enric Mas arrives in red and with 2:06 over Felix Gall and 2:10 over Primož Roglič, so Movistar should have no interest in controlling the breakaway beyond ensuring that no dangerous rider slips away.

Favorites to win stage 15

The new route seems even more favorable for riders capable of combining climbing endurance and speed in a small group.

Wout van Aert reappears among the top candidates. The Belgian already won in Córdoba in the Vuelta 2024 and arrives in great form after winning stage 13 in Loja. Moreover, the reduction in kilometers may benefit him: the two climbs should not pose a problem for him, and the long favorable stretch towards the finish fits perfectly with his characteristics.

Visma Lease a Bike also has Matthew Brennan, who has accumulated three stage wins. The Brit has shown that he can handle much more demanding routes than one would expect from a sprinter, and if he manages to pass Artafi with the front group, he will likely be the fastest rider in a large finish.

The unknown will be Visma's tactics. In Loja, we saw Brennan actively participate in the breakaway while Van Aert finished off the stage. With two riders capable of winning in different ways, the team may again force the others to take on the chase.

Bryan Coquard is one of the few men capable of challenging Brennan in a sprint. He already won in Xeraco and later finished second behind the Brit in Lorca. If Cofidis decides to control the race, the Frenchman is again a clear option.

Magnus Cort also fits particularly well in a day like this. The Dane can enter the breakaway, overcome the climbs, and finish from a small group. One-X also has riders like Andreas Kron to toughen the race.

Another particularly interesting name is Vincenzo Albanese, who has already shown during this Vuelta his ability to survive broken stages and maintain speed at the finish.

The stage also opens a new opportunity for Finn Fisher-Black, who has freedom within Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe while Primož Roglič focuses his efforts on the general classification.

Thibau Nys could also enter the fight if the Puerto Artafi causes a significant selection. A completely flat sprint would not be the perfect scenario for him, but a finish after a very fast and selective race could favor him.

Among the riders who could seek a victory from the breakaway are also Axel Laurance, Alessandro Romele, Bastien Tronchon, Ethan Hayter, Kevin Vermaerke, Ramses Debruyne, Orluis Aular, and Pau Miquel.

The big question will be whether Visma decides to take on the weight of the chase. If Van Aert or Brennan manage to get into the right breakaway, the chance of a break increases significantly. If both remain in the peloton, other teams with sprinters will have to decide if they are willing to work to bring them to Córdoba.
