Three Spanish teams battle for a spot in the 2027 Tour de France, with only two wildcards available
Burgos Burpellet BH, Euskaltel-Euskadi, and Caja Rural-Seguros RGA aspire to obtain an invitation for the Tour de France 2027. The three have finished the season within the top 30 of the UCI ranking, an essential requirement to compete for one of the two free spots that ASO will grant.
Burgos, Euskaltel, and Caja Rural enter the race for the Tour de France 2027
The participation of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA in the Tour de France 2026 has opened new expectations for Spanish ProTeam category teams. But there are three Spanish structures that could compete for the invitations for the next edition, although none have guaranteed their presence.
Burgos strengthens its candidacy and Caja Rural wants to repeat
Burgos Burpellet BH seems to be moving especially to increase its chances. The team finished 24th in the UCI ranking and has strengthened itself with three French riders from TotalEnergies: Mathieu Burgaudeau, Mattéo Vercher, and Thomas Bonnet.

These additions improve their roster and could increase their appeal to ASO, especially due to the experience of the three riders in the French calendar.
Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, for its part, finished 23rd in the ranking and could aim to repeat its participation from 2026, although it has not yet officially communicated that this is its primary objective.
Euskaltel has traveled halfway around the world to compete in a grand tour
The most striking case is that of Euskaltel-Euskadi. The Basque team managed to finish 28th in the UCI ranking after a true time trial to accumulate points during the last weeks of competition.
Euskaltel found itself almost 500 points away from the target, and to achieve it, it expanded its calendar and sent riders to races in Algeria, Hong Kong, and Panama.
In Algeria, it accumulated more than 200 points and later achieved another 93 at the Gran Prix de Chiriquí in Panama. There, Gotzon Martín also won the overall classification of the Clásica Provincia de Chiriquí.
The sports director Pablo Urtasun acknowledged in an interview with AS that the signing of Mikel Landa for 2027 was decisive for undertaking such an effort. "For him, we would have gone to race even in Antarctica," he assured.
Euskaltel's priority is to compete in a grand tour with Landa. Although La Vuelta seems the most natural option, the team does not rule out the Giro or the Tour, taking advantage of the presentation to publicly showcase its aspirations.
Five invitations, but only two at ASO's discretion
The problem is that the competition will be especially intense. With 18 WorldTeams, the Tour can gather 23 teams. Three of the five invitations correspond to the best ProTeams in the 2026 ranking, which would be Pinarello Q36.5, Tudor Pro Cycling, and Cofidis, while ASO has two discretionary spots.
To compete for them, it is necessary to have finished among the top 30 teams in the UCI ranking, a requirement that all three Spanish formations meet.
However, candidates like Unibet Rose Rockets, which has been pursuing its debut in the Tour for some time, and TotalEnergies, provided it confirms its continuity for 2027, also appear.
For now, no invitation has been granted. The three Spanish teams have managed to meet the sporting requirements to enter the selection, but it will be ASO that decides which teams will be at the start of the Tour de France 2027.
