AI has come to stay in many areas of our lives. Cycling could not remain oblivious to this tool that has helped Ekoi engineers find the perfect starting design for their new time trial helmet and thus save them a lot of work in development.

Ekoi joins the trend of oversized time trial helmets

Time trial helmets are increasingly larger, seeking to optimize the way wind flows in a wider range of conditions and, at the same time, integrate as much as possible into the cyclist's physiology, allowing air flow to circulate where engineers aim to reduce resistance.

The theory of wider profiles is not new, in fact, we have been seeing it in wheel and frame profiles for over a decade. The issue is that, applied to helmets, it produces tremendously disproportionate models that have generated controversy, as happened with the Giro model created for Visma-Lease a Bike at the beginning of last season.

Now it is the French brand Ekoi who adds to its catalog a helmet with these characteristics called Pure Aero, prototypes of which we have already seen on the heads of cyclists from the Cofidis team, Arkea, Burgos-Burpellet-BH, or the well-known long-distance triathlete Patrick Lange.

In the case of Ekoi, a relatively small brand compared to other manufacturers, developing such a helmet represents an almost unattainable effort, something that their engineers have overcome by optimizing the available resources.

They have resorted to Artificial Intelligence to analyze the characteristics of the rest of the peloton's time trial helmets and focus on their strengths. This has allowed them to do all the preliminary work very easily, thus having a very refined preliminary design on which their engineers could work. In this way, they have needed to invest many fewer hours of testing with CFD software to find a design that meets their objectives.

Obviously, among these objectives was better aerodynamics, but also achieving comfort so that the cyclist could maintain the position for as long as possible, as well as properly cooling the head and another very important aspect in time trial helmets, maximizing the field of vision.

In addition to AI, Ekoi has also used 3D scans of athletes like Patrick Lange or Chris Froome to use them as models in their CFD simulations.

In this way, Ekoi has manufactured a helmet that follows the current trend of large volumes, with which they claim to achieve a 6% improvement in aerodynamic resistance compared to any other time trial helmet currently on the market. A helmet that is already available on the Ekoi website for €352.92.
