The radical Ekoi pedals go on sale without any issues with the UCI
After a long development and overcoming the bureaucratic obstacles that the Nice Métropole Côte d'Azur team had with the UCI for their use in the prelude to the dispute of the Étoile de Bessèges last year, their revolutionary automatic pedals PW8 designed to improve the power transfer applied by the cyclist finally arrive in the Ekoi catalog.
Better power transfer, maximum lightness, and optimal aerodynamics. This is what Ekoi PW8 pedals are like
Despite their tortuous debut in competition, banned in competition due to a bureaucratic issue, Ekoi PW8 pedals are now a reality. A tremendous development effort by the French brand that, over the past two years, has been optimizing its concept and testing it with the help of cyclists from Nice Métropole Côte d'Azur and former professional cyclists such as Claudio Chiapucci, Michele Bartoli, Julien Absalon, or Philippe Gilbert.
We can now find the Ekoi PW8 system on the brand's website. We have to talk about a system because, due to its completely specific design that does not use the typical fastenings used by cleats on the market, they require a shoe with an exclusive sole for these pedals, therefore, the set also requires using the brand's shoes.

Shoes that, in any case, are a top-level product, with a double flap design, a rigid carbon sole, and double boa to ensure a firm grip.
Focusing on the pedals, the first thing that catches the eye is their wide support surface. In fact, Ekoi claims that these PW8 have a base of 1,500 mm², more than double that of Look Keo pedals. Besides, they have a minimalist structure which allows reducing the weight to just 105 g per pedal, possible because the spring, fixed at the front tip of the pedal, is very small in size.
The pedals have a curve that fits perfectly into the shoe sole where the cleats are located, in plural since the fastening consists of two pieces, one located at the front and the other in the midfoot so that the shoe sole becomes part of the pedal fixing system, with sole and pedal perfectly integrated with each other when the system is fixed. By the way, cleats that are hidden in the sole structure which, combined with the rubber inserts of the sole, allow walking without the difficulties of conventional road cleats.
A design that allows the separation between the sole and the pedal axis to be just 8 mm, hence the number in its denomination PW8 which translates into a more direct power application, meaning power losses are minimized.
The total integration between sole and pedal also has another added advantage, which is that the set is more aerodynamic than conventional pedals.
The only drawback of these pedals is that, being such a specific design and the obligation to also purchase the shoes, the set has a price of 554.57 euros, with the pedals not currently available separately for those who already have PW8 shoes.
