The Irish triathlete John Blake was arrested by the police in that country for exceeding the speed limits. A situation that reminds us that bikes are vehicles that must respect the current traffic rules, including rules related to maximum speeds. Blake was lucky and the situation ended with just a verbal warning.
This Irish triathlete discovers that speed limits also apply to bikes
An interesting situation was shown on social media by the Irish triathlete John Blake, who was stopped by the police during one of his training sessions a few days ago. The reason: riding at 62 km/h in an area limited to 50.
Blake, who is preparing for his participation in the Ironman 70.3 in Venice, was testing a new 58-tooth chainring, so he decided to push himself a bit to see how far he could go with that new setup.
Fortunately for him, he was not ultimately fined the 40 euros that the fine would have amounted to according to the legislation of that country, but the officer simply reproached his attitude verbally, saying "Tell cyclists that they cannot exceed the speed limit, that they do not own the roads, that they must be careful."
Incidents like this precisely remind us of the instructions given by the officer to this triathlete, and that bikes are, in all respects, vehicles that have rights and obligations to fulfill when traveling on public roads, including, of course, speed limits that are often overlooked, especially in urban areas, but also in places like mountain descents.
