The Giro could start in Australia in 2027

The issue of the starts of the Grand Tours abroad is getting out of hand. At least that is the conclusion that can be drawn after the statement of an Australian journalist who explained that RCS and different cities in Australia are in talks to make the furthest Grande Partenza in history a reality.

The Giro d'Italia could be looking for an even tougher challenge with a start in the antipodes

In recent years, the starts of the Grand Tours outside their home countries have become common. The early stages that bring the spectacle of these races to a different type of audience that welcomes them with tremendous passion and, in turn, brings significant benefits to the organizer.

A few days ago we saw how the Giro d'Italia started its journey in 2025 in the lands of Albania and, a couple of days ago, an Australian journalist revealed that RCS, the organizing company of the Giro d'Italia, is in talks to take the race to Australia, specifically to the surroundings of the city of Perth although, apparently, Melbourne or Sydney could also be interested in hosting the event.

It seemed like the ultimate when the Giro d'Italia started from Israel in 2018, however, this surpasses anything imaginable, especially due to the tremendous logistical difficulties that would involve moving the entire race setup between points so distant on the planet.

Asked about it, Mauro Vegni, director of the Giro d'Italia, does not rule out anything "it is difficult from a practical and logistical point of view, but we do not say no to anyone in advance" while acknowledging the interest from the authorities of those cities in having the Giro d'Italia in their lands.

Of course, all this rekindles the long-awaited desire of Spanish fans for La Vuelta to return to the Canary Islands after a disastrous start in those lands in the 1988 edition. A dream longed for by Javier Guillén but, for one reason or another, despite being something that is discussed every year, it never seems to materialize.
