The Cape Epic 2026 is left without a rainbow jersey, an accident with a car door leaves Keegan Swenson injured
The Absa Cape Epic 2026 loses one of its big names even before the start. The reigning world champion of XCM and new recruit of Specialized, Keegan Swenson, will not be able to compete in South Africa after confirming a fracture in the iliac crest, the upper part of the hip bone, caused by a car accident during training.
The XCM World Champion Misses the Cape Epic
The incident occurred when a car door opened in his path while he was riding, a blow that at first did not seem to have serious consequences. Swenson decided to continue with his schedule and days later took the start in Santa Vall, the gravel race promoted by The Traka in Girona. However, the rider himself admitted that he competed in pain and even had difficulty walking after the race.
Despite the discomfort, the American traveled to Cape Town to prepare for the Cape Epic alongside his teammate Matt Beers, with whom he formed one of the strongest pairs in the field. It was there that he received the results of an MRI that confirmed the fracture in the iliac crest, as well as "other complications" that have not been publicly detailed.

With that diagnosis, the participation of the world champion was automatically ruled out. Facing an eight-day stage race with nearly 16,000 meters of elevation gain with a hip injury was unfeasible.
Swenson arrived in 2026 as one of the absolute references of international XCM and as one of the major sporting attractions of the Cape Epic, where he was going to compete wearing the rainbow jersey. His absence represents a significant setback for both his team and the race itself.
The American will now return to Tucson (Arizona) to undergo further tests and begin the recovery process. In the short term, the goal is to assess the timeline for returning to competition in a season start that is seriously affected by this unfortunate accident.
The Cape Epic 2026, which will take place from March 15 to 22 over 692 kilometers and 15,900 meters of elevation, thus loses the reigning world champion before its start.
