The arrival of airbags in the peloton is accelerating: more brands and teams are interested
A few weeks ago, at the Vello Follies fair, the company Aerobag presented its cyclist airbag system. It has been confirmed that several cycling teams are interested in testing it, including Picnic-PostNL and Visma-Lease a Bike, which will start using it for testing purposes imminently.

The peloton looks favorably on the Aerobag airbag system
Visma-Lease a Bike will be the first to incorporate the Aerobag airbag system into the cyclists' gear, as confirmed by Quinton Van Loggerenberg, co-founder of the brand that aims to revolutionize cyclist safety with a lightweight, non-intrusive airbag system that can be equipped in all types of clothing.
For the development of its airbag, Aerobag has worked hand in hand with Moa Sport, the parent company of the cycling clothing brand Nalini, whose garments are used by Picnic-PostNL. In fact, it was this team that encouraged Nalini to collaborate with Aerobag for the development of the airbag. In fact, Nalini plans to market a bib short that incorporates the Aerobag system before next summer.

As with everything related to products intended for road cycling, commercial success largely depends on its adoption in professional competition. However, its widespread implementation still presents many doubts, as suggested by ACP president Adam Hamsen.
The Belgian explained that for the implementation of the Aerobag system to be successful, it must be comfortable, not affect the cyclist while pedaling, and, of course, be effective in the event of a fall. Of course, it would also be necessary to check what happens in the case of accidental activation of the airbag or how its activation will affect the cyclist's continuity in the race in the event of a fall.

The brand claims that this will not be a problem since the Aerobag system is designed so that the cyclist's clothing does not suffer any damage and the cyclist can continue pedaling normally after its activation. Additionally, they have complete confidence in the functioning of the electronic systems and the algorithms that determine whether activation is necessary. In any case, it will be the tests in competition that will ultimately determine whether the Aerobag offers advantages in terms of safety and whether it can be used without issues, apart from, of course, helping the brand continue to develop and improve the product.
Initially, the Aerobag system has only been incorporated into a bib short, although the brand is already thinking about expanding development to daily use jackets for urban cyclists and other types of solutions for disciplines such as mountain biking or triathlon.
