When the Tour de France reaches Alpe d’Huez, it rarely leaves anyone indifferent. The mythical alpine climb reappears in the decisive stretch of the race with a short, explosive stage and all the ingredients to provoke a new battle among the favorites or a prestigious victory from the breakaway.

Preview of stage 19 of the Tour de France 2026: Alpe d’Huez once again dictates the outcome

Schedule and key points of stage 19 of the Tour de France 2026

  • Start: 14:00 h (CEST)
  • Expected finish: between 17:24 and 17:44 h (CEST)
  • Route: Gap – Alpe d’Huez
  • Distance: 127.9 km
  • Total ascent: around 3,450 meters
  • Type of stage: high mountain

Alpe d’Huez awaits after a day without respite

The stage barely exceeds 125 kilometers, but it will be intense from the start. The peloton will first tackle the Col de Bayard and the demanding Col du Noyer, two climbs that can turn the fight for the breakaway into a real battle from the first kilometers.

After a long transitional stretch, the Col d’Ornon will arrive, the prelude to one of the most legendary mountains of the Tour. From Bourg-d’Oisans begins the 13.8 kilometers of Alpe d’Huez, with an average gradient of over 8% and its unmistakable 21 hairpin turns. Although the final stretch slightly eases the gradient, the climb accumulates enough toughness to mark significant differences after almost three weeks of competition.

Favorites

If the stage is decided among the general classification men, Tadej Pogačar and Remco Evenepoel are once again the top candidates, with Isaac del Toro and Paul Seixas closely watching the fight for the podium. However, if the favorites prefer to reserve some of their strength for the last big alpine stage, the breakaway may once again have options. In that scenario, Richard Carapaz, Thymen Arensman, Sepp Kuss, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Valentin Paret-Peintre, or Tom Pidcock stand out, all of them with enough level to conquer a summit that is part of the history of the Tour.

Alpe d’Huez always multiplies tension and excitement. In a Tour that is approaching its conclusion, stage 19 brings together all the ingredients to become one of the most memorable days of this edition.
