Specialized keeps its promise: the Cotton TLR surpasses the legendary Continental GP5000 S TR

At the beginning of 2026, Specialized introduced the Cotton TLR, the brand's first cotton tubeless tire and the direct heir to the legendary Turbo Cotton. At its launch, it promised to combine the low rolling resistance of a cotton casing with the advantages of modern tubeless technology. Now, several months later, those promises seem to have been backed by one of the most respected testing labs in the industry.Specialized launches the Cotton TLR, its most advanced cotton tire

The new Specialized Cotton TLR dethrones the Continental GP5000 S TR in the reference lab for tires

The latest analyses published by Bicycle Rolling Resistance place the Specialized Cotton TLR ahead of the Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR, the tire that has been considered the benchmark among competition road models for years.

What is Bicycle Rolling Resistance?

When it comes to rolling resistance, few names have as much influence as Bicycle Rolling Resistance (BRR). Behind this independent project is the Dutchman Jarno Bierman, an engineer and cycling enthusiast who has been developing his own protocol for over a decade to objectively measure the performance of hundreds of tires.

His database has become a reference for enthusiasts, manufacturers, and teams, as it compares all models under the same laboratory conditions, measuring aspects such as rolling resistance, puncture protection, and wet grip.

The Cotton TLR surpasses the GP5000 S TR

The main conclusion of the new analysis is that the Specialized Cotton TLR 28 manages to outperform the Continental GP5000 S TR 28 in the three most important areas for a versatile competition tire: rolling resistance, puncture protection, and wet grip.

In rolling resistance, the Cotton TLR registers 9.3 W compared to 9.7 W for the Continental under the testing conditions used by BRR, placing it among the fastest tubeless tires on the market.

It also scores better in puncture resistance of the tread (49 points compared to the 38 equivalent points of the GP5000 S TR according to the comparison presented by Specialized) and has a very clear advantage in wet grip, with 81 points compared to 70 for the Continental model.

The lab also points out a weak spot

Although the overall rating is excellent —5 out of 5 and the "Highly Recommended" rating—, Bicycle Rolling Resistance also highlights a weakness of the new Specialized tire.

According to Jarno Bierman's analysis, the Cotton TLR is clearly optimized for 21 mm internal width rims, like those used by current Roval wheels, and its sidewalls exhibit lower resistance than most tubeless road tires analyzed to date. Therefore, he recommends avoiding its use with particularly wide rims, where the risk of damaging the tire's sidewalls increases.

A tire born to compete

The Cotton TLR was specifically developed for competition. It uses a new Poly-Cotton Corespun casing of 320 TPI, tubeless-ready, along with a dual compound Gripton T2/T5 and a seamless vulcanization process designed to reduce rolling resistance without compromising control. It is available in sizes of 28, 30, and 32 mm, with a declared weight starting from 280 grams and a recommended price of 99 euros. Specialized launches the Cotton TLR, its most advanced cotton tire

While there are still specific time trial tires capable of offering even lower rolling resistance figures, Bicycle Rolling Resistance's results now place the Specialized Cotton TLR as one of the new benchmarks among tubeless competition tires for general use, taking that role from the Continental GP5000 S TR in one of the most influential independent comparators in the industry.
