Shimano XTR PD-M9200 pedals review: the changes you can’t see are the ones that matter most

The Shimano XTR pedals have been a reference in competitive MTB and gravel for years. Their SPD system, low weight, and, above all, reliability have made many cyclists continue to choose them over lighter alternatives. With the new PD-M9200, presented a few weeks ago, Shimano has decided to keep a formula that works practically intact, while correcting one of the main weaknesses of the previous generation.

We tested the Shimano XTR PD-M9200: is it worth changing from the M9100?

When Shimano presented the new XTR PD-M9200, it was clear that we were facing a discreet evolution of the previous M9100. There is no significant weight reduction, nor a new platform or changes in the well-known SPD engagement system. However, after analyzing their differences, we found some modifications that may be more important than they seem.

Starting with the numbers, the XTR PD-M9200 maintain practically the same weight as their predecessors. Shimano announced 314 grams per pair, while on the scale they weigh around 315-320 grams, depending on the version. An insignificant difference that is unlikely to influence the bike's performance.

The platform height also remains unchanged at 15.1 mm. It is one of the features that have always distinguished the XTR: a very low profile that favors pedaling stability and helps reduce exposure to impacts against rocks.

The engagement system remains the usual double-sided SPD, with independent tension adjustment via four screws, two on each pedal. Its operation is exactly what any user accustomed to Shimano would expect.

Additionally, the two axle options are maintained, the standard 55 mm and another 3 mm shorter, which allows reducing the separation between the feet and bringing the position closer to that used with Shimano SPD-SL road pedals. We tested the new Shimano XTR PD-M9200 pedals: the changes that are not visible are the most important

The most important improvement is in the axle sealing

Although it is difficult to differentiate both generations externally, there is a change that justifies a good part of this update.

One of the known issues with the previous XTR M9100 was related to the axle seal. With use, this small piece responsible for protecting the inside of the pedal could progressively move outward, compromising the sealing and allowing water and dirt to enter.

Shimano has modified the machining of the axle to incorporate a small protrusion that helps keep the seal in its position. It is a simple solution, but it directly addresses one of the problems that could compromise the durability of the M9100.

Additionally, the axle support has been revised with a longer bearing sleeve, while the pedal body features a slightly wider support surface for the shoe.

On the outside, the most evident difference is at the end of the axle. While the previous M9100 had a more elaborate and sculpted finish, the new M9200 features a completely flat finish.

These are small modifications, but they make more sense from a reliability standpoint than from pure performance.

Pedals that continue to prioritize reliability over weight

The new XTR are not the lightest automatic pedals on the market, nor does it seem that Shimano intended to achieve that.

Their main argument remains to offer a robust set, with a proven engagement mechanism, a stable platform, and relatively easy maintenance.

In that sense, the sealing modification may hold more value for many users than a reduction of 10 or 20 grams. Especially for those who train and compete year-round, in rain, mud, and with numerous bike washes.

The improvement should reduce the risk of problems associated with the seal displacement, although it will be prolonged use that ultimately confirms to what extent durability is increased compared to the previous generation.

Is it worth buying the new Shimano XTR PD-M9200?

With an official price of 159.99 euros, the XTR PD-M9200 remain among the high-end options on the market.

If you are currently using M9100s that are functioning correctly and have not presented sealing issues, the change is difficult to justify. You will not find appreciable differences in weight, height, or engagement operation.

On the other hand, if your previous pedals have suffered seal displacements or you are looking for a new set for an XC or gravel bike, the M9200 are more interesting precisely because of that internal revision.

Our assessment is that Shimano has improved its XTR pedals where they really needed it. There is no revolution or major commercial arguments, but rather an update aimed at extending their useful life.

And in a component that should function for thousands of kilometers without requiring too much attention, that may be the most important improvement.
