Shimano redesigns its cycling shoes to fit a wider range of foot shapes

Shimano has just introduced DYNALAST 2.0, a new generation of its platform for the design and fit of cycling shoes. The Japanese brand maintains the concept that it has been using in its high-end models for over a decade, but introduces significant changes in the shape of the shoe and, especially, in the space available for the forefoot.

Shimano DYNALAST 2.0: more space for the toes and three different lasts

Finding a shoe that properly supports the foot without causing discomfort after hours is one of the most delicate points when choosing cycling shoes. With DYNALAST 2.0, Shimano aims to expand the number of cyclists who can find that balance within its catalog.

To develop this second generation, Shimano claims to have worked for years on biomechanical research, gathered feedback from cyclists, and conducted hundreds of 3D foot scans. Pressure mapping techniques and biomechanical analysis have also been employed.

The most evident result is a new shape for the forefoot that allows greater freedom for the toes to expand naturally during pedaling. The goal is to reduce pressure points without compromising stability, as Shimano maintains a firmer grip in the midfoot and heel areas.

The other major innovation is the introduction of three last options: Narrow, Standard, and Wide, with more pronounced differences than before.

This is how the DYNALAST 2.0 lasts change

In the Standard version, Shimano announces approximately 4% more space in the toe box for a size 43, while the fit in the midfoot and heel remains close to what is already known. The change is primarily aimed at gaining comfort during long rides.

The transformation is even greater in the Wide last. In a size 43, the new version has approximately 6 mm more width in the toe box than the previous wide last from Shimano and offers around 7% more space for the toes. The brand aims to provide a clearly differentiated alternative for cyclists with naturally wide feet.

On the opposite end is Narrow, a lower volume last intended for those seeking a tighter shoe. Shimano also recommends it as an alternative for cyclists who previously used their shoes with a specific women's last.

Precisely, the new approach may solve another common problem. According to Shimano, some cyclists previously needed to resort to a larger size simply to achieve enough space in the forefoot. With DYNALAST 2.0, the increased width of the toe box should allow those cases to use a shoe length closer to their actual foot size, avoiding oversizing the footwear solely for width reasons.

DYNALAST has been the foundation of Shimano's high-performance shoes for over a decade for road, gravel, and cross-country, and this update maintains the goal of promoting efficient power transfer, but Shimano has now placed more emphasis on adapting the shoe to a greater diversity of feet and allowing a more natural movement of the forefoot.
