SCOTT Ransom 2024: completely renovated
The SCOTT Ransom 2024 is here and it comes completely renewed. The brand's reference for Enduro looks like a completely different model and is presented with 170mm of travel on both axles, updated and customizable geometry, and a new suspension system with a hidden shock absorber.
Key features of the SCOTT Ransom 2024
- New 6-bar suspension system
- Hidden shock absorber, integrated into the frame
- 170mm of travel front and rear
- 29" wheels with Mullet option
- HMX carbon frame and swingarm for RC models
The SCOTT Ransom 2024 debuts a new 6-bar suspension system and hidden shock absorber
Scott's engineers have been working on the project of the new Ransom for two years, and the result is a spectacular bike that, to start with, debuts a 6-bar suspension system and integrates the rear shock absorber into its frame just like they have done before in other models of the brand, such as the SCOTT Spark.
RECOMENDADO
At first glance, what stands out the most is its hidden shock absorber, but we will see that its position is more relevant. The shock absorber is positioned horizontally, in the lowest possible part, which has allowed them to give a twist to the kinematics to achieve a higher level of performance.
The swingarm is joined to the main triangle by two links, like a VPP, with which it shares some aesthetic similarity, but if we look closely we see that it has little to do with it, since the swingarm is articulated, with a Horst Link near the rear dropouts. And between the two main links we find some plates that control the movement of both.
The most sophisticated part of the Ransom's suspension is located in the lower link. One of the pivot points is concentric to the bottom bracket and, in addition, it is responsible for transmitting the movement to the shock absorber inside the frame.
This is a true work of engineering that we had the opportunity to manipulate and whose engineers explained to us the design process, optimized to the maximum thanks, among other things, to the finite element analysis procedure.
At this point, we also have a guide next to the bottom bracket to help us adjust the sag, or to check the maximum travel reached, since we find an indicator that records the sag reached by the shock absorber.
All the pivot points of the suspension slide on sealed bearings, including the shock absorber's attachment to the link.
What does the Ransom 2024 achieve with this new suspension?
The new system allows configuring and optimizing each parameter of the suspension without compromising the rest. This is usually a headache for engineers, as many objectives are sought in the design of the suspension, such as independence from pedaling, sensitivity, independence from braking but with a good anti-rise value, etc. And it is really difficult for a suspension to be 100% optimal in all respects.
Well, with the 6-Bar system of the Scott Ransom 2024 they manage to fine-tune the behavior of all these parameters without having to sacrifice any of them.
The new Scott Ransom 2024 continues to offer 170mm of travel on both axles and the system offers compatibility with shock absorbers from the main brands, including Fox, RockShox, Ohlins or Marzocchi.
It comes standard with a Fox Float X NUDE shock absorber, customized for the Ransom and has three positions activated by remote control.
The peculiarity of the NUDE shock absorber, as many of you will know, is that the intermediate position reduces the positive air chamber, increasing progressivity and firmness. This way, the Sag is also reduced, being a very optimal adjustment for pedaling.
This intermediate position, in the Ransom, unlike other NUDE shock absorbers from Scott does not act on the hydraulic, so, as they told us in the presentation, it is feasible to use it on descents where we need more progressivity.
For the adjustment of the shock absorber we have an indicator next to the bottom bracket bearings that records the percentage of sag of the suspension, making the sag adjustment very easy. It also records the maximum sag reached in motion to be able to have the reference of the travel used.
Scott Ransom 2024: every detail contributes to expand its capabilities
The frame of the Scott Ransom has a really sophisticated design and its interior is completely clean. Gone are the carbon frames with edges and folds inside due to the manufacturing process. This allows to fine-tune the thicknesses without fear of compromising reliability.
In addition, a detail to highlight is that the frame has almost no metal insert, which are points where weight is added and complicates manufacturing. In the design of the Ransom, the stiffness values of both the frame and the swingarm have been taken into account. With current manufacturing technology, a very high stiffness can be achieved, but an excess of stiffness makes the bike ride worse. To optimize this harmony in terms of stiffness and flexion throughout the entire frame, stiffness was measured at 5 different points of the prototypes and countless tests were done with riders on the terrain.
Of course these details have also been taken into account in the aluminum swingarm that some models mount. Swingarm constructed mixing hydroformed aluminum and forged parts, which we also got to hold in our hands and observe its good finishes.
Another very interesting detail in its design is that, thanks to the configuration of the suspension with the system of links so low, the seat tube has no interruption at all in much of its length. This gives a lot of margin to mount telescopic seat posts of long travel, up to 180mm in size M and 210mm in larger sizes.
In addition, this suspension configuration has allowed the top tube to be lowered significantly, giving the new Ransom a very low standover for a bike with so much suspension travel, thus offering unlimited freedom of movement for the rider.
Versatile and customizable geometry
The Ransom's frame is full of useful details and solutions. For starters, although it comes standard with both 29" wheels, it is compatible with Mullet configuration. To do this, simply reverse a flip chip located at the junction of the chainstays and lower linkage, and we can mount a 27.5" rear wheel.
We also have the possibility of varying the head angle by simply rotating the installed cups 180º, varying by +6º or -6º with respect to the central position, which is also available by mounting the neutral cups. In total three steering angle options.
One of the aspects that has required more hours of design is the lower cover that covers the shock absorber. This cover not only gives access to the shock absorber, but also acts as protection.
The engineers told us that it took a lot of 3D printed prototypes to come up with the final design that guarantees great resistance.
In addition, they have taken very seriously that the opening and closing mechanism is easy, but at the same time clear and safe, with no looseness that could cause any noise.
Removing the cover not only gives us full access to the shock, but the diagonal tube conceals the Syncros Matchbox Kit, which consists of an easy-to-remove case containing a spare inner tube, disassemblers and multi-tool.
Focusing on the geometry of the Scott Ransom we see that it takes a small step forward, compared to its predecessor, in terms of steering throw, length, etc..
The seat tube is now more vertical to improve the position on climbs, reaching 77.2º. The reach also increases to 458mm and the steering angle reaches 63.8°. As a result, the overall length also increases to 1238mm.
These measurements are in size M and with the most launched configuration in the steering, and give us an idea of the downhill capabilities of the Scott Ransom 2024.
