The return of Samara “Sammie” Maxwell now has a date. The winner of the overall standings of the XCO World Cup 2025 has announced that she will return to competition in mid-August, thus bringing forward a comeback that initially seemed reserved for later. The New Zealander will reappear at the Swiss MTB Cup in Lostorf (Switzerland), just a few weeks before the World Cup enters its decisive phase and with the World Championship still to be contested.

Sammie Maxwell brings forward her return to competition after ten months of absence: she will return in August

The news marks the end of an unusual break in elite mountain biking. After completing an extraordinary 2025 season, in which she was crowned the overall winner of the World Cup thanks to outstanding consistency throughout the calendar, Maxwell and her team surprised everyone by announcing, even before the start of 2026, that the rider would not compete for much of the season.

Far from being an injury, the decision was due to a need for physical and mental recovery after the enormous strain accumulated during the previous year. Maxwell then acknowledged that she was still not fully recovered from the effort it took to fight for the overall title throughout the season, so she chose to take a break in her career before returning to the highest level.

An unusual break, but increasingly necessary

In professional XCO, it is not common to see a rider in peak physical condition voluntarily stop their career for so many months without being injured. However, Maxwell's decision highlighted an increasingly present reality in high-performance sports: the importance of timely identifying symptoms of physical and psychological fatigue before they lead to much more serious problems.

For years, it was common for many riders to continue competing despite accumulated exhaustion, which in many cases ended up causing long periods of underperformance or even the premature end of their sports careers. The new generation of cyclists seems to approach this issue differently, prioritizing health and recovery as part of their own athletic performance.

Maxwell's case was one of the most striking examples of this new mentality, as she decided to stop precisely when she was at the best moment of her sports career.

Return at the decisive moment of the season

Now, ten months after her last competition, the New Zealander believes the time has come to return. Her comeback will take place in mid-August at the Swiss MTB Cup in Lostorf, an event that will serve to regain competitive rhythm before the intense end of the season.

The calendar also comes at a particularly attractive moment, as the second half of the World Cup is about to begin in Les Gets and the XCO World Championship still remains one of the major goals of the year.

In the announcement of her return, Maxwell expressed her excitement about putting on a number again after these months away from competition.

“I am very happy to return with the team. I am truly grateful for having had the opportunity to dedicate these last months to myself, but I have missed competing a lot. I want to thank everyone who, between New Zealand and Europe, shared this period with me and respected my decisions and my timing. I can’t wait to see the whole team again and to put on a number once more!”

Although it will be necessary to see how long it takes her to regain her best competitive level, the presence of the reigning overall World Cup champion adds another incentive to a second half of the season that promises to bring together almost all the top XCO specialists in the world. Her return also sends an important message to the sport: sometimes, stopping in time can be the best way to prolong a sports career at the highest level.
