UAE Team Emirates-XRG has just announced the definitive diagnosis of Tadej Pogačar after the severe fall that forced him to withdraw from the Vuelta a España 2026 during stage 8. Tests conducted at the hospital have confirmed a concussion, a displaced fracture of the left clavicle, and a stable fracture of the cervical vertebra C7.

The medical report thus confirms the seriousness of an accident that had raised all alarms from the very beginning. As we reported after the fall occurred, Pogačar had to be attended to for several minutes on the asphalt and ended up leaving the race in an ambulance while he was the leader of the general classification.

UAE confirms the diagnosis of Tadej Pogačar after his fall

The team has reported on the condition of their rider after Pogačar underwent a complete medical evaluation at the hospital. In addition to the three main injuries, the Slovenian has multiple abrasions as a result of the impact with the asphalt.

The positive news within the seriousness of the diagnosis is that no other significant injuries have been detected and, especially, that Pogačar shows no neurological damage.

"Unfortunately, Tadej suffered a severe fall during today's stage and could not continue the race," explained the medical director of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Dr. Adrian Rotunno.

The medical officer later confirmed the diagnosis: "He is stable and, after a thorough medical evaluation at the hospital, Tadej has been diagnosed with a concussion, a displaced fracture of the left clavicle, a stable cervical C7 fracture, and multiple abrasions. Fortunately, there are no other significant injuries or neurological impairment."

Pogačar will need surgery on his clavicle

The displaced fracture of the left clavicle will require surgical intervention, although the team has already indicated that the operation will not be performed immediately. Precautions arising from the concussion necessitate delaying the surgery.

Pogačar remains stable and under the supervision of the medical team of UAE Team Emirates-XRG. The team will communicate a new update on his condition after the operation.

For now, no timeline has been established for his recovery, which is particularly relevant considering that the World Championship appears as one of his next major goals.

The fall abruptly ended a Vuelta that Pogačar was dominating. The Slovenian had won three stages during the first week and, before the accident, was leading the general classification by 3:50 over Enric Mas.

Additionally, this marks Pogačar's first withdrawal from a Grand Tour. The Slovenian was aiming in this edition to complete his collection of victories in the three Grand Tours after previously winning the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia.

Now, however, any sporting objective takes a back seat. Pogačar will have to undergo surgery to address the clavicle fracture and will remain under medical supervision for the concussion and cervical fracture. UAE Team Emirates-XRG has not yet set a date for his return.
