Pogačar undergoes successful surgery for his collarbone fracture: now his recovery begins

Tadej Pogačar has already undergone surgery to treat the displaced fracture of his left clavicle that he suffered in his fall during the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG has confirmed that the operation was successfully performed after the doctors finally gave the green light for the intervention, initially postponed due to the concussion that the Slovenian also suffered.

The UAE Team Emirates-XRG confirmed on Monday afternoon that Pogačar had received the necessary medical authorization to undergo the procedure.

"This afternoon, Tadej successfully underwent surgery on his left clavicle after receiving the go-ahead to proceed with the intervention," explained Dr. Adrian Rotunno, the team's medical director.

"The operation went well and he will remain in the hospital for a few days for post-operative follow-up," he added.

The displaced fracture required surgery, but the operation could not be performed immediately after the accident. The concussion forced the doctors to wait and monitor his progress before authorizing the intervention.

Mauro Gianetti had already indicated that, due to the nature of the fracture, Pogačar would have to undergo a major operation. Ultimately, the evolution of the concussion allowed it to be performed this Monday.

Now, once his condition allows, he will be able to return home and begin the recovery process under the supervision of the medical team of UAE Team Emirates-XRG.

"When he is ready, Tadej will travel home to begin his recovery and rehabilitation under the supervision of the team's medical staff," explained Rotunno. "We will continue to closely monitor his progress throughout the recovery process."

For now, UAE has not communicated any timeline for him to return to training nor has it set a possible date for his return to competition. The World Championship in Montreal remains the main unknown. The men's road race will take place on September 27, so there are less than four weeks for the Slovenian to attempt to defend the rainbow jersey.

As we explained, in a clavicle fracture, it is possible to see professional cyclists return to competition in about four weeks, but Pogačar's case is conditioned by the nature of his fracture and the intervention that was required.

His environment has not officially ruled out the World Championship, although Gianetti already acknowledged on Sunday that recovering Pogačar in time does not seem likely.
