Pidcock has not done well in the Giro: neither stages, nor general classification and doubts about La Vuelta
After his fantastic start to the season in which he won the AlUla Tour and has been collecting podiums here and there, the expectations for Tom Pidcock's performance in the Giro d'Italia were high, a race with routes that on paper could adapt well to the characteristics of the British cyclist but in which, however, he has not been able to perform as he would have liked.
Pidcock reflects on his first part of the season after a grey Giro d'Italia
The Giro d'Italia ended for Tom Pidcock without achieving any of the goals he had set for this race, especially a stage victory that he was far from achieving and to which, curiously, he came closest in sprints, although with no chance against a Mads Pedersen who won the first and fifth stages in which Pidcock finished in 5th and 3rd position respectively.
He would also achieve a good classification in stage 11, where he finished in 4th place but, again, with no chance of disputing the victory in a stage where Richard Carapaz's fierce attack decided that day.

However, instead of focusing exclusively on winning stages, losing time and getting into breakaways, Tom Pidcock has chosen in this Giro d'Italia to stay with the favorites as much as possible. This led him to occupy a high position in the general classification finishing in sixteenth place, far from the Top10 which at one point in the race became an alternative goal.
However, in statements at the conclusion of the Giro d'Italia Tom Pidcock remained positive "Of course I would have liked to come home with something more, but in a Grand Tour it is incredibly difficult to achieve everything, whether fighting for stages or for the general classification. Still, I think this has been my best participation in one of them. I didn't do too bad".
The British rider seeks an explanation for the result achieved both in his own mentality during the race "I came with more ambition for this Giro than I finally showed", and in the intense first part of the season in which he had focused all his attention on the Ardennes without specific preparation for the Giro d'Italia "Considering how I arrived, without a true altitude concentration after the Ardennes classics, maybe I couldn't expect much more. All the riders who finished ahead of me came with better preparation, with fewer days of competition in their legs".
Now Tom Pidcock switches from road bike to mountain bike and, in his road calendar, there are no more scheduled races until La Vuelta. "I hope to be able to prepare more specifically for La Vuelta. With some mountain biking in Andorra during the summer and the European Championships in Melgaço", however, he also hinted at some doubt about his participation in the Spanish race "I feel tired because I have been competing since January", confessed the Q36.5 rider.
