Route of Stage 19 of La Vuelta a España 2026
The day will start with a long stretch from Vélez-Málaga along the coast, and it won't be until after about 75 kilometers that the mountains will really begin.

The Puerto de Las Abejas and the Puerto del Viento will be the first two categorized climbs, although there will be more ascending terrain between them and afterwards that will contribute to increasing fatigue. After passing through Ronda, the race will finish returning towards the coast and will reach Estepona before facing the decisive climb.

Peñas Blancas will be the true judge of the stage. It is 18.7 kilometers at 6.5%, with the first 2.5 km being among the hardest and ramps reaching 13%. The summit is located at almost 1,270 meters above sea level.
La Vuelta already finished here in 2022, and then Richard Carapaz took the victory ahead of Wilco Kelderman.
Roglič needs to attack and Mas returns to his terrain
The time trial changed the situation of the race less than expected. Roglič only gained 33 seconds on Mas and is now second overall at 1:37. Felix Gall fell to third place and is now 3:01 behind.
This leaves Mas in a favorable position. The Movistar leader does not need to attack and has so far shown to be very solid in the big mountain stages. The pressure is now on Roglič, who needs to start cutting time, and Gall must regain ground if he wants to return to second place and maintain any chance of fighting for the red jersey.

Peñas Blancas, due to its length, will allow for more than just an attack in the last few hundred meters. But everyone will keep in mind that another even more demanding mountain stage awaits on Saturday.
Favorites to win Stage 19
The breakaway has a good chance of contesting the victory. Santiago Buitrago should be especially active again to defend his mountain leadership and also has enough level to win at Peñas Blancas.
We should also keep an eye on João Almeida, third in the time trial in Jerez and now without important objectives in the overall, as well as Jarno Widar, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Sepp Kuss, Marco Brenner, and Mikel Landa.
If Movistar, Red Bull-BORA, or Decathlon decide to control the breakaway, the candidates will be the general classification men themselves. Mas, Roglič, Gall, and Carapaz should then fight for a victory that could come with significant time differences.
Peñas Blancas will be the first of the last two major battles of this Vuelta. Mas arrives with an advantage; it is up to Roglič to find a way to put him in difficulty.
