New Domane AL Gen 4: Trek revamps its entry-level bike with high-end details
The new generation of the Trek Domane AL comes to the market with a lighter frame, relaxed geometry and a 38 mm wheel arch that also allows it to ride on a large number of gravel trails. The range consists of three setups and starts at 1,199 euros.
Versatility and comfort prevail in Trek Domane AL Gen 4
Trek has presented the fourth generation of its entry-level model, the Domane AL. Aware of the importance of a segment in which many cyclists converge, the U.S. manufacturer has designed a bike in which versatility, comfort and some details typical of more exclusive ranges take precedence.
The new Domane AL comes with 32 mm tyres, although it offers a 38 mm wheel arch (previously 35 mm) that makes it an all-road model capable of riding on any asphalt surface and also valid on certain gravel trails. Although it is not a pure gravel bike, the Wisconsin-based company assures that it is suitable for the easiest gravel trails.

The versatility goes further and aims to be a bike that is also suitable for everyday commuters. For this reason, it has been equipped with anchors for installing a bag on the top tube, a luggage rack and mudguards.
The Alpha 100 Series aluminum frame has been successfully redesigned, which together with the carbon fork now mounted, reduces the weight by about 220 grams less than the previous Domane AL Disc. On the other hand, the new Domane AL comes with a more ergonomic handlebar, with better control, shorter reach and 4 degrees of flare.
Another new feature is the new through axle compatible with the UDH dropout and the internal cable routing, one of those details typical of higher ranges.
Trek has decided to give the Domane AL Gen 4 a relaxed endurance geometry for a more upright position that provides extra comfort to help the rider withstand long days on the bike. This translates into a 71.9° head angle, 73° saddle angle, 420mm chainstays, as well as 377mm reach and 590mm stack.
The Domane AL range is divided into three setups that have a lot in common. The Domane AL trio shares frame, fork, rims, tyres, saddle, handlebars, stem and headset.
To find the differences, look at the weight, which varies by up to 700 grams, and mainly at the drivetrain. Although Shimano is responsible for all three, the AL 2 has a Claris R2000 rear derailleur with 8-speed cassette, while the AL 4 comes with a Tiagra 4700 and 10-speed and the AL 5 with a 105 R7100 and 12-speed.
