New Shimano SAINT and DEORE XT flats, wider platforms and thinner profile
Shimano expands its platform pedal catalog at a time when aggressive MTB and eMTB and technical trail riding continue to gain prominence. The Japanese brand introduces two new models within its most recognized ranges, SAINT and DEORE XT, transferring its historical experience in SPD systems to a platform designed for those who prioritize freedom of movement and immediate control over the bike.

Shimano launches the new SAINT PD-G8040 and DEORE XT PD-M8240 platform pedals
Shimano starts with a clear idea. To apply the principles that have made its automatic pedals a reference for decades to a flat design adapted to current MTB. This translates into wider platforms, thinner profiles, and a construction aimed at withstanding constant impacts in enduro, bike park, or downhill scenarios.

Both models share key elements. Extra wide platform, double-sided design to improve foot support, and a thin profile that reduces the risk of impacts with rocks. Additionally, they feature a fully repairable construction, something increasingly valued in components subjected to intensive use.
SAINT PD-G8040: the gravity approach taken to the extreme
The new SAINT PD-G8040 positions itself as the most radical model in the range. It is clearly oriented towards downhill, aggressive enduro, and bike park use, where the priority is absolute stability in extreme conditions.

The platform stands out for its highly pronounced double concavity, which allows the shoe to "settle" into the pedal, improving the feeling of control on technical descents. Shimano has specifically worked to maximize the usable contact surface without excessively increasing thickness.
The construction combines a forged aluminum body with a composite skid plate that acts as protection against impacts. The pins, designed to withstand hits, offer multiple configurations and come with different heights to customize grip.

- Design: double concavity
- Pins: 10 per side with 4 optional internal positions

DEORE XT PD-M8240: balance between performance and versatility
The DEORE XT PD-M8240 adopts much of the technical base of the SAINT model, but with a somewhat more versatile approach. It is designed for demanding trail and enduro, where long pedaling sessions are combined with technical sections both uphill and downhill.

It maintains the same wide platform and low profile, which translates into a stable and predictable footing. The main difference lies in a slightly less aggressive pin configuration and a somewhat simplified construction by omitting the specific skid plate of the SAINT.
The result is a pedal that seeks a balance between grip, durability, and efficiency on long rides.
