Max Kanter surprises in the sprint and takes stage 2 of the Paris-Nice 2026
The second stage of the Paris-Nice 2026 ended with an unexpected outcome in Montargis. In a finish marked by chaos in the peloton and the absence of the top sprint specialists, German Max Kanter (XDS Astana) seized his opportunity to claim the most important victory of his career in the WorldTour.
Max Kanter wins the sprint in Montargis and claims his first WorldTour victory
The stage, spanning 187 kilometers between Épône and Montargis, was characterized by a relatively controlled development, although the finale heated up with a solo attempt by Dutchman Daan Hoole, who attacked with just over 20 kilometers to go. His offensive kept the tension high until the final meters, but the peloton practically neutralized him under the banner of the last kilometer.
The outcome was complicated by several roundabouts and curves in the final kilometers, leading to a stretched peloton and several positional losses among the sprint favorites. In this scenario, the XDS Astana train appeared, successfully repositioning Kanter at the front at the decisive moment.

With Mike Teunissen launching the sprint, the German accelerated strongly to surpass New Zealander Laurence Pithie, who had to settle for second place. Jasper Stuyven completed the podium after a strong finish in a group where many sprinters were left out of the fight for victory.
The race leader, Luke Lamperti (EF Education-EasyPost), was also affected by the chaos in the final approach, although he managed to finish fifth, a result sufficient to retain the yellow jersey at the end of the stage.
Who missed out on options was Vito Braet, who had tried to play his cards in the general classification thanks to the bonus seconds earned in the intermediate sprint. However, several positioning issues in the last kilometer left him too far behind to contest the front positions.
After two stages dominated by the fast men, the race now changes script. The third stage will be a 23.5-kilometer team time trial, an exercise that could provoke the first significant movements in the general classification, as each rider will record their individual time in the standings.
