Mathieu van der Poel suffers a wrist fracture after his fall in Nove Mesto, his schedule is up in the air for now
Bad news is confirmed for Mathieu van der Poel after his spectacular double fall in the MTB World Cup in Nové M?sto. The Dutchman has a fracture in the scaphoid, one of the carpal bones located in the wrist, which complicates his immediate schedule and leaves his participation in the Tour de France up in the air.
Van der Poel confirms a minor wrist fracture and postpones his altitude training
The medical report issued by the Alpecin-Deceuninck team specifies that it is a fracture that also involves ligament damage in the wrist joint. Fortunately, there are no signs of the possible knee injury that some Belgian media had initially mentioned.
"Following his double fall during the WHOOP UCI MTB World Series on Sunday in Nové M?sto, Mathieu van der Poel has been diagnosed with a minor avulsion fracture of the scaphoid bone, indicating ligament damage in the wrist."
The injury will be subject to continuous and intensive medical evaluation throughout the week. And there will be an extra follow-up scheduled towards the end of the week, which could confirm or rule out his participation in the Critérium du Dauphiné.

"As a result of this injury, Mathieu will not travel to La Plagne to start the first days of his altitude training," his team has communicated. This training was a key part of his preparation for the Critérium du Dauphiné (June 8-15) and the Tour de France (July 5-27).
Alpecin-Deceuninck insists on the need for "patience and careful monitoring," as the evolution of swelling and pain in the coming days will be crucial in establishing recovery timelines and a possible return to competition. "At the moment, it is too early to set a return date or predict how his schedule will be in the coming weeks," they add.
Although Belgian media were already pointing out on Sunday night that his presence in the Tour de France was hanging by a thread, the team prefers to be cautious. The medical evolution will be closely monitored during this week and, as they report, greater clarity is expected by the end of the week after a new medical review.
For now, the mystery persists. Van der Poel is not ruled out for the Tour, but everything will depend on how his recovery progresses in the coming days.
